Midweek Mouth-Off: Your thoughts on VIDI?

Video-on-demand and streaming services for TV and movies is the way of the future. The old way of being told what you can watch and when you can watch it is going the way of the dinosaur, with streaming services giving flexibility, accessibility, and badly needed affordability. To fill this gap in South African TV we now have VIDI, South Africa’s first video-on-demand service.

Personally, I haven’t had a chance to sign up yet, but this is definitely an idea I can get behind. I’ve always wanted a decent alternative to DSTV for TV shows and movies, and VIDI might be the answer. Of course it does have its downsides (no sport for instance) but the pros may well outweigh the cons.

So, what are your thoughts on VIDI’s launch? Have you signed up for their free 30-day trial? If so, what has your experience been like? And if not, what are your thoughts on streaming in general?

    I’m unsure.

I just googled “vidi south africa” to find out more from their site… it doesn’t even appear on the first page of search results. Not a good sign. Darryn’s article linked above was result no.7 though 😀

I like the idea of having our own completely legal service finally and it’s not expensive in itself – but all the associated line & ISP account costs you need for it add up if it’s not something you already have & are looking to replace DSTV with it, plus like you said – no sport then. I’m also a cynical bastard & assume the price won’t stay as reasonable after an introductory period.

I don’t even have DSTV so this would be a great alternative. Right now they don’t have a heck of a lot to watch, but I assume a bigger library will come with more sign-ups, but the price might increase with that as well. If they had more shows, and current shows (like, close to the US air date) then I’d definitely be more keen, but right now it’s a “wait and see” for me.

The way I see it, at the moment they can’t woo tech savvy people due to the selection not being big enough and they aren’t even targeting anyone else (as evidenced by their terrible SEO).
Definitely a step in the right direction though and I’m glad we’re finally getting something, but waiting for now as well.

It looks good, but I’d need a larger catalog before it will be worth my while.
