Guardians Of The Galaxy was a movie that told a pretty great and complete story. It also left audiences scratching their head, as several questions were also raised. Who is Peter Quill’s real father? How will Thanos retrieve the infinity gem? Did Ronan ever hear of proper dental hygiene?

But of course, there’s one other question that needed answering. One burning conundrum that needed to be solved. And director James Gunn just answered that mystery. I’m going to assume that some of you still haven’t seen Guardians Of The Galaxy yet. And yes, I’m giving you a dirty stare. So spoilers below:

Right, so near the end of the film, Ronan is seemingly down for the count, but so is his ship which is about to crash into Xandar. Groot then heroes up, saves the crew and seemingly dies. Of course Groot isn’t dead, merely resting as he happens to have reverted back to a smaller sapling state and carried around in a potplant by Rocket.

And he’s also got some fly moves. When the end credits roll, its Groot who is shaking along with them, but only when a nearby Drax isn’t watching. So why was Baby Groot so dance-shy around The Destroyer? According to Gunn, when he was on Doug Benson’s “Doug Loves Movies” podcast (via a transcription from comicbook.com ), the answer involves a deleted scene that didn’t make the final movie:

There was actually a scene that we cut from the movie where big Groot was dancing to ‘Livin’ Thing’ by ELO. And it wasn’t such an elaborate dance. It was more that he was just moving up and down like this, and Drax was dismissive and gave him this look like he was a loser when he did that. Dancing is ludicrous to Drax. I don’t think he understands it. If Drax owned a town, if he was a mayor, the first law would be no dancing. But yeah, so at the end of the movie, little baby Groot didn’t want to get caught dancing, because he would kill him.

Fair enough. Groot will most likely have regrown to his full-size for the sequel. But in the meantime, lets relive that scene again!

  1. Ah and here I thought the big question was how did they manage to reconstruct a tape deck, or how did the tape last so long without stretching.
