Midweek Movie Mouth-Off: more comics on the small screen please!

As much as the big screen has been good to comic book adaptations, the small screen has been even better. Between The Walking Dead, Gotham, The Flash, Arrow, Constantine, Powers and even your tangentially-linked shows like Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we are definitely spoiled for choice when it comes to getting our live-action comic fix.

That being said, there’s still lots of undiscovered potential in comics that don’t come from the pages of Marvel or DC (or Image, before anyone gets nit-picky about the mention of The Walking Dead).

If there’s a comic I’d like to see being made into a TV series, it would be Freshmen, from publishers Top Cow. Co-created by Seth Green, Freshmen follows a group of college students who get superpowers thanks to your usual science-lab accident. The twist is, they get powers based on what they were thinking about at the time. So you have the vegan who can now talk to plants (and can’t eat them any more), a relationship-obsessed girl that can force anyone to fall in love with her, an ex-couple that have telekinesis (but only when they touch), and the resident comic-book geek that went out for pizza and didn’t get any powers at all. It’s sarcastic, it’s funny, it’s kind of obscure, and it would be perfect for a TV adaptation. And I’m choosing Freshmen because it looks like Y: The Last Man will never make it to screen at all.

So, leaving out the characters that we know from series that have been around for forever, let me know which other, less well-known comics you’d like to see come to life on the small screen.

Imagine a TV series with all the quirkier Marvel characters like frog Thor and Howard the Duck O_o

I kinda think there’s enough superhero-y comic book shows right now. That’s why I’m fairly interested to see the Apple series. I mean, iZombie.

I’m still miffed that Constantine gets no traction, but Flash is a huge hit even though half the time I want to strangle the characters and tell Flash: “WTF are you DOING?! You are stupidly fast, so ACT like it!”

But if I had to choose, I want a live-action version of Bone.

    Hmmm…

The Boys could be a fun tv series.
Crossed could be a great horror series.

I am gonna have to say Spawn, I have already forgotten about the movie, loved it as a kid before I knew any better. So a TV series “Done right” about that would be epic. I mean come on, he defeats Satan AND God, are you kidding me!

Have you ever seen the animated series? It was pretty good.

Oh no doubt, and I guess that counts as small screen, but live action would be a whole other story, that’s what I am excited for.
