I’m just going to go out on a limb here, and guess that while writer-director Michael Dougherty likes superheroes, he sure as hell doesn’t like national holidays. Dougherty was the co-writer on Superman Returns, X-Men 2 and also co-penned the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, but has one previous feature film directing credit to his name, the horror flick Trick R Treat.

As you may have guessed from the title, that flick takes place on Halloween, and next up in his holiday horror list is the Christmas-based Krampus, which finally proves that there are far worse Santa Claus than your drunk Uncle Bobby with the bad breath. What or who is Krampus? Well, according to this first trailer for the horror-comedy, he’s the cloven-hoofed, horned, shadow of St. Nick and he sure as hell does not look very jolly.

Check it out below.

When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.

Krampus stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, Emjay Anthony, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler. It is scheduled for release internationally on December 4.

  1. Krampus is German anti-Santa – Santa rewards the good kids, Krampus ‘takes care of’ (read ‘punishes’) those who’ve been naughty (any kids who’ve grown up in a German household will know the story).

So there’s a lot of mythology they can play with in this. Just not sure how it’ll turn out – I mean that trailer isn’t exactly scary…
