Welcome the spooky month of October! Last year I was new to writing for TheMovies and, in my eagerness to prove my worth, I themed an entire month of Midweek Movie Mouth-offs around Halloween (I slightly regret that decision now). I’m going to try to do the same this year, but seeing as I’ve already done the obvious ones, the topics this year might be a little more obscure. Let’s get started!
Whether intentional or not, movies that don’t bill themselves as horrors can still get pretty scary. Take Ex Machina for example. It’s a science fiction drama, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t give me some serious chills. My heart was in my throat for most of the film and by the climax I was watching it from between my fingers. Ex Machina left me feeling deeply unsettled, and isn’t that what a horror movie is supposed to do?
So whether it was buttons-for-eyes in Coraline or the brutal reality in Nightcrawler, what non-horror movie scared you the most?

I haven’t seen Fallen, is it any good?

One of Denzel Washington’s best performances but not a movie I would recommend for the religious. Then again I did watch it 20 odd years ago when I was a bit younger.

Her. Not scary per se, but holy crap was I deeply uncomfortable through the entire thing… relationship issues at the time may have been part of the source of that, though. Then again… Where the Wild Things Are was also really weirdly unsettling, so maybe it’s a Spike Jonze thing?
Don’t get me wrong, both were excellent films that I think highly of, they were just really uncomfortable films to watch, too.

That’s exactly how I feel about Ex Machina. Incredible movie and everyone should definitely see it, but damn it gave me the creeps!

Nothing shook my world to the core quite like The Road. For a week after watching it, I was genuinely terrified that this may be in our future.

Watched it at cinema’s when it came out and it did completely freak me out! Totally agree on that one.

It was kinda strange that the truly scary part of that movie is the mindset it left me with afterwards. Nothing before or since has had that kind of effect on me, and I was over 30 when I watched it. It’s completely ruined world with no hope for long term survival, the constant feeling of complete isolation and fear of actually running into another human being… Damn… I am actually getting all depressed just typing this up… *thinks about bunnies, cats and rainbows…*
