We’re not even three weeks into the new year and The Revenant has already been installed as the film to beat this year – because it’s good, really good; so good we reviewed it twice. You can catch Alwynne’s and James’ reviews here and here – spoiler alert: they both really liked it.

And they’re not the only ones. It’s already won the Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio; and racked up a very impressive 12 Oscar and 8 BAFTA nominations.

Many of those nominations are for the numerous technical feats of the movie. In case you weren’t aware, not only was the movie shot on location in very unforgiving conditions for the cast and crew, particularly the icy cold, they also relied only on natural light for filming. Which all paid off, as Alwynne said in his review:

Overall what Iñárritu delivers is a gritty, intense movie that also often plays out like a work of art. The backdrops are breathtaking – all brought to vivid life through some highly creative and technically masterful cinematography – and the environments are as lavishly shot as they are unforgiving.

For those wanting to know just how Iñárritu went about creating his masterpiece, 9 featurettes have been released covering the many aspects of production.

Now if we could just get Nick to stop doing his impression of a confused kitten grizzly bear.
