Up until recently there had been some questions regarding Warner Bros’ upcoming slate of DC Comics movies, specifically a couple that the studio had been particularly mum about. In the case of Shazam!, as with most things in Hollywood, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came to the rescue, clearing some misconceptions and confirming that the upcoming superhero movie will indeed be taking place in the same cinematic universe as Man of SteelBatman v Superman, and Suicide Squad. But what about that other superhero movie title that had also been playing coy with its details? Where would Greg Berlanti’s Booster Gold fit into all of this?

Unfortunately, if you were looking forward to watching the fan-favourite golden douchebag superhero from the future cracking wise next to Ben Affleck’s Batman, then I have some disappointing news for you. In an interview with Vulture, Berlanti revealed that “As of right now we have no connective tissue to those worlds. It’d be a separate thing.” Aw, phoeey!

Berlanti, with the assistance of longtime co-producing partner Andrew Kreisberg, is of course the man all of DC’s superhero shows on CW (Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl) so fans were really excited to see him pull off the same kind of success in the proper DC Cinematic Universe. As Berlanti explained though, they originally pitched Booster Gold as a TV show, but it just “never got off the ground.” WB went on to make their own plans for their cinematic universe which did not include Booster, but then Berlanti and Kreisberg started chatting to Geoff Johns about it and things started to come together.

You may recall that Johns is the DC Comics Chief Creative Officer, as well as being the DC Entertainment President and recently, as part of a huge restructuring efforts in the wake of BvS’ disappointing critical reception, was also appointed as the co-chief for all the movie efforts. And apparently Johns liked what Berlanti and Kreisberg were pitching, and thus got them into a room together with screenwriter Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) who had also previously worked with the pair on an acclaimed second season episode of The Flash. Together the three men managed to flesh out a story that will reportedly be a “rare lighthearted DC flick”, standing in contrast to the rather grim early offerings of the DCCU, and also breaking with the trend of every superhero movie either launching or being part of a franchise as this will be completely standalone.

At least it will be standalone until it isn’t. As we’ve recently seen, WB are being extremely reactive with their DC Cinematics Universe, adjusting plans on the fly to try and counter fan criticism. Whether this is good or bad thing is up for debate, but the fact remains that with the way they’re currently running things, don’t be surprised if in a few months’ time you suddenly find Booster Gold listed among another leaked list of upcoming DC Comics movie titles.
