Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous role in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS revealed!… Again… Maybe.

3 min read

And the JJ Abrams Star Trek rope-a-dope continues. I have to hand it to Abrams though, whereas previously his productions were airtight until the day of release, he was very clever in what he did with Star Trek Into Darkness: Instead of telling us nothing, tell us so much that we don’t know what is true. Tricksly little hobbitses.

And now for about the 37th time (give or take) we get a major clue that definitely reveals the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s high-jumping villain. Definitely until the next clue, that is.

Now it was originally rumoured, and then claimed by a number of sources on the production, that Cumberbatch would be playing Khan Noonien Singh, but then that was completely denied by JJ Abrams and Simon Pegg, and then again denied by Karl Urban who then rebutted by claiming that the character was actually Gary Mitchell instead (which all the evidence actually supported pretty well) but then the first trailer came out with a number of very Khan-like references, except that Alice Eve’s character appeared to be a dead ringer for Dr Elizabeth Dehner, a character central to Gary Mitchell’s story….*BREATHE*…

…And that brings us to today, where we get what may be our two biggest pieces of definitive evidence.

Now at this point, I must once again warn readers that while all of this is merely educated guesses and conjecture, and thus not actually revealed plot details, some might still construe it as SPOILERS so…

The Wrath of the SPOILER

Firstly, that whole Alice Eve is Dr. Dehner situation? Totally wrong. Comingsoon.net was able to visit JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and while there they learned that Eve would actually be playing Carol Marcus.

Now this is the part where the fanboys all lose their minds, while I clue in the rest of you. Carol Marcus was a central character in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a federation scientist who was actually also the mother to the estranged son of one James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise. More importantly to this article though, she was the creator of the Genesis Device, a rapid terraforming tool that can transform a lifeless planet into a Class-M habitable world  by rearranging all the matter in the vicinity. The same device that Khan would steal and then later use as a weapon of mass destruction in that film.

On top of that bit of evidence, a new image for Star Trek Into Darkness has also been officially released showing Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) looking on at Cumberbatch’s character apparently locked in the brig. While the picture itself gives us no clues, the caption accompanying the image names Cumberbatch as John Harrison.

Once again, fanboys lose minds, everybody else pay attention: Harrison was a character in “Space Seed”, the Star Trek Original Series episode where Khan is first introduced. Harrison really does nothing of much importance though except nearly getting suffocated to death by Khan, after the latter emerges from the suspended animation that Kirk and the crew found him in. Now for the name to have been revealed so willy-nilly, you’d have to believe that it’s just a ruse, and by using the name of Harrison, it points once again to Benedict Cumberbatch being none other than Khan Noonien Singh.

Just like everybody said 4 months ago.
