“Warrioooooorrs! Come out to plaaaayyaaaaay!” And it looks like they will indeed be coming to play on your TV screen sometime in the near future as Deadline reports that a new TV series adaptation of director Walter Hill’s iconic 1979 gangster action thriller The Warriors is currently in development for Hulu and Paramount TV. And the men spearheading this new development is none other than filmmaking brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, most famous for helming the last two Captain America movies – in many people’s opinion the two best Marvel movies to date – and who will be directing the two-part Avengers: Infinity War as well.

The cult classic film was based on Sol Yurick’s novel of the same name and “was set in 1979, at a time when parts of New York still resembled war-torn Mogadishu, torn apart by rivalry between deadly gangs. A charismatic leader summons these street gangs of New York City in a bid to take it over. When he is shot and killed during the rally, one of the gangs, the Warriors, is falsely blamed for his death and its member must fight their way home while every other gang is hunting them down to kill them.” The premise of the film was fairly simple and the setup rather ludicrous at times, but Hill’s taught directing – and that intense electro-synth soundtrack! – turned it into a veritable potboiler filled with all kinds of crazy characters, like the psychotic Luther, most famous for giving us that immortal line up top.

It’s being reported that this this new version won’t be a straight up remake of the movie, but “will honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex and violence”. It’s probably safe to say that the Russo’s will also be drawing some inspiration from Yurick’s original novel. The Russo’s will be producing, while relative newbie writer Frank Baldwin will also be assisting them on the scripting front. Deadline also goes on to state that no directors are attached yet, which leaves it uncertain – or even some might say unlikely – that the Russo will be stepping behind the cameras themselves.

If true, that last bit will be a bit disappointing as the brothers have been directing the hell out of the Captain American movies, giving us some the best action choreography not just in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the whole of Hollywood right now. Seeing those skills put to practice in the type of crazy violent, running gang battles of The Warriors would definitely be something really cool. With the Russo’s busy schedule though, it’s uncertain when this will be happening.
