Casting short list for female lead in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Plus, Black Widow may just drop by!

Chris Evans has played a ladies man a couple of time now already. Once, he even did it while on fire. But his Captain America is a different beast altogether. I use “beast” in the most figurative terms there though, because when it comes to skirt chasing, he’s about as exciting as watching a painting of a stamp collection dry.

And yet, a bevy of buxom beauties have lined up for the chance to be with him.

Deadline has managed to get the scoop on the shortlist of actresses currently testing for the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. At this point the identity of the character is unknown, but it’s widely regarded as being a love interest for Cap in the form of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in the first film.

The list is a collection of rapidly up and coming actresses and consists of Alison Brie (Community, The Five-Year Engagement), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four, Warm Bodies) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night, Knight of Cups).

Anna Kendrick was previously reported as being the frontrunner for the role, but I guess she didn’t make the cut this time, along with Felicity Jones who was also reported to have been considered.

While Teresa Palmer and Imogen Poots certainly look the part of Sharon Carter (if that’s the role) more than the others, and Emilia Clarke is definitely the most recognizable thanks to her turn as the Khaleesi, you’d have to think that Alison Brie has a bit of an advantage here. Not only is she a perfectly capable actress for the role, but she’s worked together with the film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, for years on Community. As we’ve seen plenty of times in the past, directors love to work with people they know that they can get along with, so by casting her that would be one less mountain to climb

Speaking of mountains, there are also reports that Scarlett Johannson’s leather clad cleavage may also be showing up in the sequel. Since Black Widow and Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier have quite a bit of history in the comics, this is certainly not unexpected. The pair were romantically involved during a few of those times that the brainwashed Winter Soldier was allowed out of his 60 year cryo sleep by his Russian masters and their secret assassin travel plans crossed paths.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled to start shooting in March 2013 and is set for release on April 4, 2014.
