Netflix recently launched in South Africa, finally bringing the beloved on-demand streaming service to our shores. For many of us though, we’ve been watching Netflix and other streaming services for years, bypassing the geo-restrictions put in place by content providers through the use of VPNs and DNS services like Unotelly and Unblock US.
Many of us still use those services despite Netflix’s global launch, because it opens up so much more content. A few weeks back, Netflix promised it would put an end to these services, making it impossible to watch content not licenced for a particular region.
“Some members use proxies or “unblockers” to access titles available outside their territory,” says Netflix Vice President of Content Delivery Architecture David Fullagar. “To address this, we employ the same or similar measures other firms do. This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it. That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are. We are confident this change won’t impact members not using proxies.”
We mostly shrugged it off – and put it down to content producers showing their heavy hands. It seems their hands are heavier than we anticipated. It looks like our favourite geo-fence hopping services are changing.
Unotelly’s homepage no longer mentions Netflix, Hulu or the multitude of restricted services it used to unblock. Instead, it’s being sold as a privacy tool.
“UnoTelly should only be used for privacy protection purpose only. Any other usage is not permitted.”
The service’s Twitter account no longer exists, and its Facebook page has been stripped to nothing. It’s companion site, Filmefy, also no longer exists. Similarly, Unblock.US has protected its twitter account, so that only followers may see its output. Its website has also expunged any mention of Netflix, Hulu or Spotify. Instead, they’re selling “Freedom, security, flexibility, speed.”
This is worrying. Are content licence holder – like Multichoice and the myriad US networks – threatening services of this ilk with litigation?
We’ve reached out to Unotelly for a statement, and will keep you updated.
Thanks to Gareth Lagesse for the tip.

Telkom LTE started messing with DNS overrides resulting in very poor performance for Netflix/Hulu via proxy services, so already moved to TPB/KAT.
I love how they prevent us from paying for content. I’m saving loads of cash now. THanks Telkom.

Put the DNS settings on the device (iTV, Media player, etc), not the router 🙂
Milesh Bhana
February 26, 2016 at 11:00
i did that , didn’t work. Unotelly said i needed to set up static routing on the router for that to work.
Gareth Runnalls
February 26, 2016 at 11:03
Then can it and get Unblock US 😛 It works just fine that way. I found that putting those settings on my router slows down the entire home network, but putting it on my iTV is fine because it only slows down content listing in the apps, but runs Netflix fine. Also, a mate of mine only has the Unotelly details in his iTV, not his router, and it works just fine… ?

At the end of the day, consumers will venture towards other means of acquiring content.
I’ve recently started using local Netflix after having already using a proxy one a few years ago for a bit. I can honestly say that my need to watch shows in less than legal means was severely challenged by service/performance of Netflix.
I guess the powers that be think that the SAME technically minded people who know how to make use of a proxy are going to just end it there, you know, because going to KAT/TPB is not within their capacity.

As for filmefy, there are alternative sites like https://flixsearch.io/ & http://unogs.com/

I am not sure about other sites but for Netflix Unotelly and Unblock-us is useless. I have tried both, but none of these worked to access Netflix. One of my friends told me that he can easily access to Netflix with “Hide-My-ip”. Then I try this VPN and it works. Its unique “DNS Protection” makes it possible to masks users’ real IP that cannot be detected by Netflix bots.

I’d be interested to know how many people have dropped Netflix and just gone back to what we did before…. torrent sites. I know at least a dozen people that dropped it (because they also put the price up at the same time they forced us into less content).
harryposter
September 2, 2016 at 05:21
Some people are coming from £80 a month to £6 a monthe from Sky to Netflix, if that’s not a good deal I don’t know what is… Stick to Sky idiot
kynky
September 2, 2016 at 08:41
Never had Sky as it was ALWAYS over priced. Also everyone I know who has Sky/Virgin also has Netflix, it’s not a replacement for most.
My point was that we were paying £5.99 for ALL Netflix content (approx 30k titles), since the VPN ban and price increase we now pay £7.49 for UK only content (5k titles).
I dropped Netflix and gave Amazon Prime a go but that was also very poor, content wise.
Once all films are released theatrically at the same time, then the content on Netflix might improve for everyone, until that day there is only one place that has all the movies we want at a price that doesn’t break the bank.

Guys, Unblock-us is over charging even more than twice a month, I have cancelled my subscription and they still charging me, I had to cancelk my credit card. And, the worst thing is that they don’t reply emails… Be careful with this company, they are untrusted!!!
harryposter
September 2, 2016 at 05:24
You have to go to your bank and tell them you want to stop the regular thingy, cancelling your card is not enough, you have to tell them to stop accepting debits from your old cards
