Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

If you don’t know your limitless zooms from your Dutch angles then this little video put together by film student Oscar Feiven for a class project, is just for you. Showing off 20 of Cinema’s Most Used Techniques, its a great introduction to the more technical side of filmmaking. It also helps prove our recent claim that we can actually educate people around here. We’re on a quest to civilize! (Thanks, Newsroom for that catchphrase).

I was always going to post this just because it opens with my favourite film shot, the long take, with my favourite use of it Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men.

As if that earlier posted alternate opening wasn’t sombre enough, here’s some Avengers related bad news: If any you pre-ordered that amazing looking Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One Collector’s Set from Amazon, then you’re about to get some bad news. The bundle is being delayed as some changes may need to be made to it. You see, while Marvel have been showing off the set in that lovely silver attache case that’s supposed to resemble the one used by Nick Fury in the movies, they apparently did it without the permission of Rimowa, the company that manufactures those suitcases, who have now promptly sued them. HULK LITIGATE!

Seems like the TV bug has bit Neil Marshall. The Descent director recently helmed one of the final season 2 episodes for HBO’s Game of Thrones, and now Deadline reports that he will be behind the camera for the pilot episode of STARZ’s new Michael Bay produced pirate series, Black Sails.

At Comic Con earlier in the year, Warner Bros showed off a couple of animated shorts that would air on Cartoon Network’s DC Nation Block. One of them, Bat Man of Shanghai, caught the attention of quite a few people and now it’s finally online for the rest of us to view as well.

Safe House director Daniel Espinosa is reportedly circling the director’s chair of Child 44, Oscar winner Richard “The Colour of Money” Price’s adaptation of the Tom Rob Smith novel of the same name. The novel was inspired by real life Ukranian serial killer, the Rostov Ripper, whose 52 murders were denied by the oppressive regime in order to hold up the facade of peace. Here’s the book’s synopsis:

In a country ruled by fear, no one is innocent.

Stalin’s Soviet Union is an official paradise, where citizens live free from crime and fear only one thing: the all-powerful state. Defending this system is idealistic security officer Leo Demidov, a war hero who believes in the iron fist of the law. But when a murderer starts to kill at will and Leo dares to investigate, the State’s obedient servant finds himself demoted and exiled. Now, with only his wife at his side, Leo must fight to uncover shocking truths about a killer-and a country where “crime” doesn’t exist.

Of all the LOST cast members, the one that I was certain would go on to have a great movie career was Josh “Sawyer” Holloway. He had Hollywood leading man written all over him, and he proved my suspicion right when he… did… nothing. OK, so maybe he didn’t prove me right right away, but as his small but crucial turn in last year’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol proved, he can certainly hang with the big boys.

And now he’s gonna hang with some really big boys, as he’s looking to join the cast of David Ayer’s (Training Day, End of Watch) DEA heist film, Breacher. He will be joining the already star studded cast of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Joe Mangienello, Malin Ackerman and Terence Howard.

Here’s a new clip out for the upcoming animated adaptation of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1.

Anime fans rejoice! Kotaku has one of the first reviews out for the live action feature film adaptation of popular manga and anime series Rurouni Kenshin and according to them, it’s “a nearly perfect film adaptation”. Phwoar.

Veteran produce Tony Krantz will be stepping behind the camera  for the fourth time, as he looks to direct Ron Shelton’s (Bull Durham) script Week 14. Described by Variety as “a four-quadrant movie in the vein of “Crash,”  [the] pic will chronicle the last three weeks of the NFL’s regular season as seen through the eyes of fictional players, coaches and their significant others.”

Gore Verbinski’s Lone Ranger remake might have hit a couple production snags (250 million snags to be exact) but everything thing’s been “Hi-Ho, Silver!”  eversince those problems got worked out. As proof, producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s been updating his blog with behind the scene photos as well as production notes on how they’ve almost wrapped principal photography.

Almost done with filming of The Lone Ranger. 125 days of shooting seemed to fly by.  We dealt with winds up to 70 mph, rain, snow,  and even wildfires but nothing has stopped us from filming this incredible movie.

The cast has been absolutely amazing and we could not have asked for a better crew. Everyone has been extremely dedicated in making this film a major success. We have a few more filming days back in California and  then post-production goes into high gear. Before we know it, it will be July 3rd, 2013 and we can’t wait to share this incredible film with everyone.

Until then, here are a few photos of our time in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona.

With a single tweeted photo Alexa Vega went from child film star to grown up girl with breasts in a skimpy top who takes classy black and white photos of herself. Well, at least that’s what most of us saw. The now definitely adult Spy Kids actress will be starring in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills as KillJoy, “the bodyguard of a whore house”, a role that has her embracing her sexuality much to people’s suprise, as she explains to THR.

“The first time I walked out in my outfit on set, everyone was like, ‘Wow, you’re not allowed to wear that!'”

“I’ve never done anything like this. I’d never felt comfortable enough, and I never thought this would be the project where I’d take a step forward.”

“There is something about playing an edgier role. You just have to focus on what you’re making, and I want to test my boundaries.”

Evil Dead 4 is no more. No, no, wait… Stop dancing. I don’t mean the new remake that has a bunch of high school girls and their beaus taking an unfortunate stopover at a cabin in the woods. That one is still going ahead, complete with Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell in the producers’ chairs. Evil Dead 4 was a proposed unauthorized sequel to the original horror comedy trilogy which was being made by Award Pictures. If you remember, Raimi’s Renaissance Films filed a lawsuit in June to get the production stopped, and now it’s been revealed that after Award’s financing fell apart, they couldn’t even afford the lawyers to contest the lawsuit in court in the allotted time, much less make the actual movie.

When you’ve had a career as reliant on impressive stunts and which has run for as long as Jackie Chan’s has, then sooner or later you’re going to have to rehash the same old stunts again, right? Well, not if you’re Jackie Chan apparently. Always one for innovation, the martial arts master is breaking out all the stops for Chinese Zodiacs, his Hong Kong action movie swan song (Sniff… I’m still sad about that news) and for this film he will be turning himself into a human rollerblade!

Check out this new teaser trailer to see exactly what I’m talking about, and then head on over to Twitchfilm to see behind the scenes of how it was done:
