Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Two weeks later and I am still as hooked on the Olympics as I was when it began. If I were to be offered a ticket acquired through a morally dubious nature right now, I’m not sure that I would have the resistance to turn it down. Fitingly, that’s exactly what this hilarious new clip from Funny or Die is all about, starring veteran actor Patrick Stewart as a cockney Olympic ticket scalper, Maisie Williams (Arya from Game of Thrones) as his assistant and Simon Pegg and American swimming star Ryan Lochte as a couple of marks.

Did you know that Guillermo Del Toro worked on a Halo movie with Game of Thrones‘ D.B. Weiss? He spoke about this to Collider as well what it would take to make the first mega successful video game movie:

“I don’t know because it’s very hard to replicate, in a linear narrative, what makes an immersive narrative like a video game work.  I think that Shadow of the Colossus by Andrei Tarkovsky, I would be very interested in seeing (laughs).  Or Terrence Malick, a contemplative version of Shadow of the Colossus, I would love to see that.  But if the three act Aristotelian structure of Act I, Act II, Act II, turning point, turning point, middle of the film structure is imposed on a video game, it’s harder to replicate the experience that makes the video game that.

I think Halo is perfect to be recreated in movie form, but there are not many properties that are that translatable.  I think that visually and atmospherically the Silent Hill movie did a very good job at translating some of the stuff, but the thing is that because the avatar you play with in a video game is at the same time a character and at the same time a character you complete—it’s a very strange symbiosis that happens in video games, you become a character.  Like when we play Left 4 Dead I always choose Francis, I’m Francis.  My daughter says, “Why?” and I say, “Because it looks like Ron Perlman” (laughs).  So I wanna be the guy, I’m not playing with Zoe.  Video games are a really inward symbiosis and I think that sometimes that becomes like literature.  When you read a book, everybody has an Oliver Twist in their mind because they heard the voice, they saw the character.  It’s almost the same with video games.”

Shia has already shown that he has no problem showing off his Lebeouf, and now he’s in talks to join controversial director Lars Von Trier’s erotic drama Nymphomaniac.

There’s a new Skyfall banner out, but it seems that somebody needs to explain to Javier Bardiem that he’s the villain in a James Bond movie and going to a Matrix cosplay event.

Some bad news now, veteran actor Bob Hoskins has announced his complete retirement from acting at the age of 69, due him recently being diagnosed with Parkinsons.

Ever downloaded pirated movies via torrents? Want to do it legally and for free? Yep, as weird as it sounds, the Internet Archive  has made available hundreds of films (as well as thousands of books and music files), completely for free on the peer-to-peer downloading service. The movies range from obscure classics like Plan 9 from Outer Space to more recent popcorn fare like The Fast and the Furious.

I wasn’t too enamoured with Hangover 2 (and by “not too enamoured”, I mean “barely laughed once”) but at least here’s one more reason to hope that the third film’s better. The lovely Heather Graham will be reprising her role as Jade the stripper in the threequel.

This new poster for the Red Dawn remake wants to bid you welcome. To the second Chris Hemsworth film after Cabin in the Woods that’s been sitting on a studio shelf for years. I wonder if people have noticed that he’s younger in his latest films?

So David Duchovny wants to make a third X-Files film. Also, he apparently disliked Green Lantern as much as I did.

“I would love to do another film, or more.  I think we’re all game for it.  I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more [enthusiastic].  Here’s a homegrown property that you don’t have to go buy, like fuckin’ Green Lantern or something, to make it.  Here you’ve got an actual action franchise that’s your own.  It’s weird to me, but I’m not an executive.  I don’t know if they made the Green Lantern either, but I’m just using that as an example of, “Why make that film?  Why not make a homegrown franchise that is excellent, and that has proven to be excellent and interesting?”  I don’t get it, but that’s not my business.”

Remember Hansel and Gretel? No, not the classic children’s story, I’m talking about the Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton film that saw them as the classic literary siblings now all grown up as professional witch hunters into some BDSM styled attire and steampunk guns. The film was pushed back from it’s initial release date of March this year to January next year.

It was assumed that this was to distance themselves from the other fairy tale inspired films being released, as well as allowing them time to do a 3D post-conversion (spit). Turns out, they also needed that time as they were a bit confused about what type of film to release. They’ve been doing test screenings of both a tamed down and more graphically violent versions of the film, and it looks like the R rated version has now won out as being the one that will get the theatrical release.

Hannah star Saoirse Ronan will be playing Mary, Queen of Scots in a new biopic from Working Title. Crowned Queen of Scotland when she was just 9 months old, married to her cousin until he died, then married to the man suspected of killing her husband, losing her throne to her 1-year old son and then executed for plotting against the Queen of England at the age of just 25, she’s one of Europe’s most interesting figures.

Actor Justin Theroux will make his directing debut with the comedy Swear to God. He will also be rewriting the film, which is set to star funnymen Will Ferrell and Steve Carrel, with Ferrell as a narcissistic man who believes that God is speaking to him.

Here’s a new trailer for the Clint Eastwood sports drama. You just know he’s about to tell those baseball players to “git off da lawn!”.

Having never read the Mortal Instruments series, this doesn’t hold that much excitement for me, but I’m sure that there’s a couple of you that will be giddy/fan-raging about this full cast listing for the first film adaptation.

MGM has hired novelist and relative newcomer to the world of film and TV, Nic Pizzolatto to draft the screenplay for their Tom Cruise starring Magnificent Seven remake. No pressure, Nic.

And we end off today on something kind of weird but also cool. There’s not much to say about this except to just let you experience it for yourself, so here’s Pac-Man: The Movie.
