Get a first look (and listen) at Bong Joon-Ho's SNOWPIERCER with this concept art and OST preview

Korea is invading America. Now before you start perfecting your Gangnam Style routine and prepping for Korean BBQ’s on the White House lawn, just know that I’m actually talking about the best of Korean cinema now taking a crack at Obamaland. Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy, Vengeance Tilogy) has the creepy family drama Stoker coming out soon while Kim Jee-Woon (A Bittersweet Life, A Tale of Two Sisters) is blowing stuff up with Arnie in Last Stand.

But it’s the third front of this Korean assault that has me the most interested: The Host director Bong Joon-Ho’s Snowpiercer.

Thus far we haven’t seen or heard much about Joon-Ho’s English language debut except for the concept, and what an intriguing one it is. The story is based on a French graphic novel and is set in 2031, where after a failed experiment to stop global warming, a new Ice Age happens killing off most of the global population. The survivors are all crammed into the Snowpiercer, a massive train powered by a “sacred perpetual motion engine” that circles the Earth non-stop to avoid the constant freezing storms. A class system develops on the train, based on the compartments people live in – from the cramped rear compartments to the luxurious front compartments – but a revolution is brewing.

And while we still don’t have any real pics of the film itself, some wonderfully moody concept art as well as a teaser poster and on-set image has been released for the film (via The Film Stage).

Also released is this absolutely brilliant snippet of Oscar nominated composer Marco Beltrami’s score for the film. Beltrami is the musical mind behind such scores as The Hurt Locker, 3:10 to Yuma, Resident Evil, I, Robot, The Woman in Black and many, many more and from what I can hear from this 3 minute sampler he is on top form once again with this score. Seriously, this is some goosebumps inducing stuff.

Besides for intriguing visuals and great music, Snowpiercer also boasts a rather solid cast in Chris Evans, Song Kangho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Alison Pill, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. I got a feeling that this may just be the dark horse “big film” of the year.

There’s currently no release date set yet for the film, but you can probably expect it in the middle of the year.
