John Hillcoat’s The Road was the type of movie that would make you want to pour drain cleaner in your ears, it’s so depressing. But, man I loved it. Beautifully crafted and wonderfully acted, it was one of my highlights of 2009 (You know, when I wasn’t busy contemplating suicide). Which is why I’ve had my eye on his next film Lawless ever since I first heard of it, and the amazing cast that the director had assembled.
This one might be a bit more lighthearted, but judging by this new Red-Band trailer it’s not by much. This is dark, mature stuff.
Oh and boobs.
“Lawless” is the true story of the infamous Bondurant Brothers: bootlegging siblings who made a run for the American Dream in Prohibition-era Virginia. In this epic gangster tale, inspired by true-life tales of author Matt Bondurant’s family in his novel “The Wettest County In The World,” the loyalty of three brothers is put to the test against the backdrop of the nation’s most notorious crime wave.
Shia LeBeouf has recently said that he’s completely done with the type of popcorn blockbuster fare that made him a household name and spawned a thousand manic Shia jokes. And while I am disappointed to be losing a great source of punchlines, I am happy that the talented young actor is finally starting to break out of his typecasting and live up to his potential.
Not that he had much choice for this film, because if he didn’t up his game he’d get completely drowned in what appears to be stellar performances from the entire cast. Hardy is on top form, while Pearce and Oldman seems to be, well Pearce and Oldman. The two actors are about as dependably amazing as you can get, even when the material they’re working is rather rubbish. Luckily for them this definitely does not look to be the case here.
