According to Iron Maiden, the seventh son of the seventh son is kind of a big deal. Even more so when this seven-squared progeny happens to be a handsome young lad in a sword and magic fantasy story like Seventh Son. And just like so many fantasy stories, we need a wise wizard, in this case brought to life through the marble-mouthed rumblings of none other than Jeff Bridges, who will teach said lad how to be a hero as he faces down an evil witch -Juliane Moore, screech on down! – all sorts of monstrous beasts and dragon halitosis.

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), the last of the Falcon Knights, had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), many years ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. He has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man’s only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son

This was the last film worked on by Oscar winning FX house Rhythm & Hues before they sadly went bankrupt, and their talent certainly shines through with fantastic visuals from the ancient cityscapes to imaginative monsters. I just hope that there’s more to this than shiny graphics, as Legendary’s Clash/Wrath of the Titans has still left me wary. I’ve never read Joseph Delaney’s dark fantasy novel series, The Wardstone Chronicles, on which this based, so I can’t say whether the story holds up, but With Bridges and Moore seemingly chomping down on some scenery, there is certainly some hope though.

Now, somebody just needs to tell Djimon Honsou, that while he was rumoured for the role years ago, this is not yet time to get Kratos on quite yet with those chained blades.

Seventh Son will be fighting dragons on January 17, 2014.

  1. Five years ago, I’d have been all over this like a bad rash.

    Now?

Meh, give me my sci-fi / dystopian future fiction. Shadowrun / Willaim Gibson FTW.

Which is an observation on my tastes having changed, not the merits of this movie, before anyone asks….
