As many of you may know Showtime’s Penny Dreadful is one of my favourite series (you can read why here) and after season 2 I need MORE! Firstly, it’s awesome horror. Yes, we do have American Horror but I found that after the first two seasons it became a bit too contrived. The story often made no sense (because HORROR) so Penny was a breath of fresh air. Secondly, the caliber of actors is off the chart (this may be slightly biased because EVA GREEN!) Each character has a great backstory and are all well developed and believable in their actions. Thirdly, the spin on the cannon of each character was new, different, but slightly familiar. Whether that be Frankenstein’s monster or Dorian Grey’s narcissistic playboy, the show has heaps to offer.
Of course that was just the first season. I was a little worried going into the second to be honest as many shows lose momentum riding the wave of their own success. Not this time. I think season two was even better. In season two we have witches, and oh my, what naughty things they are. It also had the awesome Patti LuPone who acted as the mentor for Miss Ives, sadly for only one episode though. Well such was her reception that she is returning for season two.
Series creator John Logan is bringing the Broadway actress back but as a different character. This time she’ll be offering support to our psychotic psychic in the form of an American therapist called Dr Seaward. Dr Seaward is helping Eva Green’s Miss Vanessa Ives in some ‘unconventional’ manner – we expect nothing less – after the rather tragic events at the end of season two. You can guarantee that this won’t end well.
We also have confirmation that we will see writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Henry Jekyll played by Shazad Latif (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). And you can bet that wherever Dr Jekyll is, his monstrous alter ego Mr. Hyde probably won’t be far behind. Awesome! I look forward to the spin they put on that just like the spin the put on Frankenstein and his monster. According to Collider the other new additions to the season 3 cast are:
- Christian Camargo (Dexter) as Dr. Alexander Sweet, a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa.
- Sam Barnett (Jupiter Ascending) as Dr. Seward’s mysterious young secretary.
- Wes Studi (Hell On Wheels) will become a series regular as Kaetenay, an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett) who also becomes an ally to Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton).
- Jessica Barden (Far from the Madding Crowd) as Justine, a young acolyte to Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney).
Expect more sleepless nights in 2016.
