Phil Coulson is dead. Long live, Phil Coulson! Having said that, we’ve been here before as Clark Gregg’s fan-favourite SHIELD agent/superhero fanboy was killed off in Marvel’s The Avengers, actually giving the team the origin of their name: They would avenge his death. And then he wasn’t dead anymore.
Gregg resurrected Coulson on spinoff TV series Agents of SHIELD, the character having been brought back to life as part of a plot involving alien Kree tech that is too long to get into now. The point is that for five seasons, Coulson was back to secretly saving the world with his team. Eventually though, the lethal side effects of his initial resurrection caught up to him, and the previous season ended with Coulson and longtime flame May spending his final days together in the paradise of Tahiti.
As the show looked to be on the verge of cancellation, this ending was extremely fitting. However, ABC then surprisingly renewed the show for not just one, but two more seasons (though with shortened episode counts). So would it go on without Coulson? Well, not quite. As we soon learned with the first teaser, Gregg would be back but he would be playing a very different character that only looked like Coulson, their resemblance being the season’s big mystery. And now we get to meet this “Sarge” properly with the first official trailer for Agents of SHIELD season 6!
So this Sarge and his team are planet killer who promise “the death of everything”? Well, let it never be said that they’re not ambitious.
The 13-episode Season 6 of Marvel’s Agent of SHIELD will debut on ABC in the US on 10 May. We should be getting it locally shortly thereafter.
