Stand back, JJ Abrams. There are some new masters of the “Mystery Box” in town. On Monday afternoon some Hollywood press (via Mashable) received emails with a new viral poster for the upcoming final chapter in the Hunger Games saga, telling them that “Tomorrow, 6.9.15, the Mockingjay will be heard. The Capitol must fall so that we may be free”. This was then followed up by strange packages that contained a very real, very locked mystery box.

It didn’t take long for the Hunger Games fandom to crack the code though (451, in case you were wondering) and once opened the box revealed the above poster showing a decapitated statue of Donald Sutherland’s President Snow, a message about “revolution”, links to (at the time) pretty empty TheCapitol.PN and The Resistance.PN, a black Mockingjay pin, a chunk of the broken statue, and most alluringly, a password protected USB flash drive.

So what was on the drive that Lionsgate would go through so much trouble to get out? The first trailer of course, which Lions gate unveiled late last night! And was this trailer worth all that effort? Well, see for yourself:

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

Mockingjay – Part 1 most definitely suffered from just being the first half of a tale. It wasn’t a bad movie, not at all, but because it essentially only adapted the first half of the final novel, it was nothing but setup for the actual Hunger Games part and thus felt completely different to the previous two movies.

And if you’re wondering how there can actually be another Hunger Games in the movie when clearly the people are in revolt, you would have seen in the trailer that there actually isn’t. Not quite. What actually happens is that the final assault on the Capitol takes place in massive booby trapped areas of the city, that actually make it feel like the arena in the games.

In the book, the traps in these “Games” were especially violent and brutal so it will be interesting to see if director Francis Lawrence tames it all to keep that PG-13 rating.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore, Mahershala Ali, Natalie Dormer, Wes Chatham, Elden Henson and Evan Ross. It is scheduled for release on November 20, 2015.
