Tarantino’s cowboys got their asses handed to them by cops, teenage girls and geriatric terrors. Leo’s there too, growling at everyone.

  • 01. RIDE ALONG 2

This supposedly lame buddy cop movie continues to take the top spot – that’s three weeks now, I believe. It’s a good pay day for Ice Cube and Kevin Heart, but still not one of their all-time best performing movies.

  • 02. DIRTY GRANDPA

It’s hard to tell if this movie is a success or not, but it’s definitely a step up from Zak Efron’s big flop We Are Your Friends. Local audiences helped a solid 2nd spot debut, but will it last? Robert De Niro clearly doesn’t care.

  • 03. THE 5TH WAVE

The-5th-Wave-7

A fairly good debut for a teenage film, this science fiction story is not endearing critics. But given how persistent stuff like Divergent and Maze Runner have been, The 5th Wave might be a franchise in the making.

04. THE REVENANT (incl Imax)

Yeah, maybe it is just a long bit of revenge porn where Leo grunts a lot and eats raw fish. That doesn’t mean The Revenant isn’t awesome. And audiences are treating it that way: despite dropping two spots for the new debuts, it’s doing very well for an adult-themed slow-burner. Those rarely even make the top 5, let alone stay there.

  • 05. DADDY’S HOME

Will and Mark’s new comedy project also stepped down two spot for the newcomers, but appears to be holding its own. It has already out-earned their other collaboration, The Other Guys.

  • 06. NORM OF THE NORTH

This movie must be a stinker, because animated films don’t tend to drop so readily. Sure, it had to make space for the debuts, just as the other films on this chart, but usually such kiddie films have a better grip than most.

  • 07. HATEFUL EIGHT

hateful eight 2

It’s a rather poor 7th place debut for Hateful Eight, the controversial Tarantino movie. Controversial because, well, it looks kinda boring. Three hours of his dialog is not my idea of fun. More trunk shots, please.

  • 08. ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP

Down three spots, this is the biggest drop of the charts. Now say that in a super squeeky voice.

  • 09. THE GOOD DINOSAUR (Incl 3D)

Its downfall briefly slowing, Pixar’s misstep managed to drop only by a single position. There’s not much else to add, except that this is a good one to drop the kids off at.

  • 10. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS (Incl 3D, Imax & 4DX)

Sharing the Chipmunk’s drop total, Star Wars fell three positions, now teetering at 10th. Obviously it will retire in glory, but it’s interesting to note that, chart-wise, The Force Awakens didn’t perform  much better or worse than any other blockbuster. I think Fast & Furious 7 actually had a better and longer run locally.

  • DUCKING OUT OF THE FRAY…

Goodbye Point Break, you terrible idea for a remake. Secret in Their Eyes also bows out after a respectable run, while ‘n Paw Paw Vir My Darling makes a surprise exit after holding onto the sixth spot for three weeks. Maybe it left the stove on.

But that’s a generalised statement. I love his movies, yet don’t make me sit through Death Proof or large parts of Inglorious Basterds.
