SA's Weekend Top Ten: Don't get lost

Mountains are out and mazes are the new thing in a chart that is struggling with any serious blockbuster action.

Everest, which may have launched at this time to avoid any serious competition from other big movies, is not finding much box office gold. After debuting last week at the top, it tripped and stumbled down the slope to fourth.

Instead the next Maze Runner film has arrived to try its luck at the top. The previous film was a big hit, partly thanks to a small budget. But even though that doubled, the teen sci-fi saga appears set to make a healthy profit again.

Another debut this week is The Intern, where Robert De Niro takes a job at a fashion blog. Such heart-warming, family-friendly comedies are a rarity, so it might have some staying power. It entered strongly at the second spot.

The only other debut this week is a painfully low entry for Self/Less, a thriller about a billionaire swapping bodies. It arrives at the ninth spot – one of the worst top 10 arrivals for what should be a bit hit. Ryan Reynolds really just can’t catch a break. I bet he is praying every day that Deadpool will be a hit.

Everything else moved down a bit lower. The most stable were animation Maya The Bee and comedy Schuks! Pay Back The Money, both only down one position. Thriller The Perfect Guy lapsed two spots, so did Vacation to eighth. But outside of Everest it’s Transporter: Refueled that crashed the most – down three spots to seventh. Equalling that is local comedy Die Pro, down from seventh to tenth.

Leaving the charts this week are Hitman: Agent 47, We Are Your Friends and Tell Me Sweet Something.

Schuks! Pay Back The Money is the top earner with over R13 million.

A total movie glutton, nothing is too bad or too obscure to watch, unless it's something like The Human Centipede. If you enjoyed that, there is something wrong with you. But bless you anyway - even video nasties need love...
