STARSHIP TROOPERS may soon return… to TV

Fancy a bit more bug for your viewing appetite? Paul Verhoeven’s spectacular adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s novel has legions of fans and they might be happy to hear that Starship Troopers is on its way back – maybe. And if it does arrive, it may be a television series.

Hitfix reports on a interview with producer Neal Mortiz, who said:

“We’re developing it. We’ve actually been talking about either doing it as a feature or doing it as a television show. So, we’ll see.”

But let’s not get too excited just yet. Mortiz may have one hell of a CV (seriously, check this bad boy out), but Starship Troopers isn’t on that list. The closest thing to a Verhoeven property I could find was the dismal Total Recall remake. I’m not sure Mortiz has had anything to do with anything Starship Troopers. That said, he is just reiterating existing news: back in 2011 Mortiz also spoke about making a new chapter. So it may take several more years to see if anything comes from this.

On the other hand, pretty much everything outside the first movie has been rubbish. I know that the latest chapter, the CG movie Starship Troopers: Invasion, has a lot of fans. But I thought it was dull and plodding. Yes, it’s the best of the sequels, but that doesn’t say much. The franchise also had the Roughnecks animated TV series, which died after one season despite fan campaigns for more.

So maybe some fresh blood is good. But can it recapture the magic of the original movie? And would fans prefer a new film or a TV series? I’m leaning towards TV, but that really depends on who will host it.

Starz, please let it be Starz.

  1. I’d be happy with either, a giant action movie or a more thoughtful TV series.

That first Starship Troopers is awesome because of the slight cheese, the propaganda and some pretty awesome bugs. If they can make it right then make it so, but this could go South quicker than homemade porn.

I enjoyed the animated series when it was on, but that was many years ago. I might not enjoy it as much now. As for the movies they just went downhill.
