Steven Soderbergh is in THE KNICK with Clive Owen

Steven Soderbergh is a liar. Ok maybe, liar is too strong a word, but the acclaimed director certainly knows how to… bend the truth a bit. After declaring Side Effects to be his last directorial effort, so that he can retire to a life of producing and painting (yes, painting), Soderbergh then went on to direct the Liberace biopic, Behind the Candelabra, for HBO.

So will he be hitting that canvas now that he’s got one last directorial itch out of his system? Hell, no! He’s taking on 10 more itches on TV!

Deadline is reporting that Soderbergh has signed on to produce and direct every single episode of a new 10-part drama series, The Knick, for US cable network Cinemax. The Knick is set to be a period drama set in in New York in 1900, and will follow the staff of Knickerbocker Hospital, colloquially known as the Knick. Said staff will be pushing the boundaries of science in a world where simple medicine that we take for granted, like antibiotics, have not been invented yet.

Clive Owen,  just the latest in a long line of film stars hanging out on high profile TV shows lately, is set to star as well as produce. The latter being a job that apparently there are plenty of vacancies for on this production, as Big Miracle  co-writers Jack Amiel and Michael Begler will also be producing while penning the pilot script.

If you’ve seen Cinemax’s latest blood, profanity and nudity laden hit, Banshee (and really, you should, it’s trashy goodness), then you would know that the no holds barred network is an odd choice for period medical drama, but heyn, it’s Soderbergh. If there’s one guy that knows what he’s doing behind the camera, its him. Just don’t ask him for advice on how to retire peacefully.
