Nicolas Winding Refn doesn’t make easy movies. They’re always artistically gorgeous and take interesting thematic angles, but they’re not exactly your typical 8pm Sunday night eTV movie. Even his most mainstream commercially successful film, Drive, is not for everybody (cue shocking memories of elevator scene). So no, they’re not easy. And they’re also not always good, as his last effort, the beautiful but messy and divisive Only God Forgives, unfortunately showed.
So when it comes to his latest effort, the fashion world-set The Neon Demon, I’m not sure just what I will be getting, but I know it’s probably going to be intriguing. And clearly look amazing, as you can see in the first trailer for the upcoming drama. Check it out below.
When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.
So is this a Black Swan-like drama, a tragic love story, a dark thriller, a Countess Bathory-inspired horror movie, or a mix of all of the above? Because I honestly have zero clue. I do know that I will definitely be watching it when it releases… well, I don’t know when as there’s currently no local release date, but it is slated for June in the US. The movie stars Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Karl Glusman, Bella Heathcote, Abbey Lee, Desmond Harrington, Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves. Yes, Keanu Reeves.
