This new G.I. JOE: RETALIATION trailer has more ninjas, more explosions and more Channing Tatum

It’s now just about 5 and a half  months since G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s original release date of Jun 29, 2013. That date was famously pushed back to March 29, 2013 after audiences at early test screenings told the studio that they felt the movie needed more Channing Tatum and it needed to be in 3D. I”m guessing that the test audience consisted only of teenage girls who had all just consumed the strongest marijuana known to man.

Now while we can’t yet comment on how well the 3D turned out, this newly released trailer definitely confirms that yes, Tatum is definitely in this film.

A follow-up to the 2009 release of G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, which grossed over $300M worldwide, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Skydance Productions, in association with HASBRO and di Bonaventura Pictures, commences production on G.I. JOE: RETALIATION. In this sequel, the G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Brian Goldner, from a screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick based on Hasbro’s G.I. Joe(R) characters, the film is scheduled to be released on June 29,2012.

I’m finding myself really looking forward to this, which is not something I expected to say when I first heard of it. The first film – barring a great Parisian chase sequence – was a cheese-drenched mess, and new franchise helmer Jon Chu is an unproven action director better known for pop ‘n lock rather than lock ‘n load. And then there’s Channing Tatum. This year he went a long way to start erasing the vitriol I have long held for him with 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike, but judging from that trailer, the old Tatum may just be back.

However, this film is written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the minds behind Zombieland, a film I rather enjoyed. Also, there’s Dwayne Johnson who not only has finally turned into the badass action hero we hoped he would before he started wearing tutus for Disney, but he’s already proven how well he can put boot to ass on a failing franchise, when he helped turn Fast Five into a massive commercial and critical success. And pairing him up with Bruce Willis, Ray Park and the rather fetching Adrianne Palicki definitely doesn’t hurt either.

I doubt you’re going to need to bring your brain with you to the cinema for this one, but it should leave you with a grin on your face afterwards.
