Do you know who Rick Famuyiwa is? I have a feeling that you’re going to soon. The indie writer/director has just burst onto the scene garnering the attentions of several big studios (Marvel is rumoured to want him to direct Black Panther) and he did it all with dope. No, he didn’t bribe studio execs with narcotics (though that is probably a solid tactic). I’m talking about Dope, the film festival critical darling that has announced Famuyiwa as a hot new talent to look out for.
The LA-set dramedy about a trio of 90’s nerds who get in way over their heads when they’re caught up in the middle of a drug deal gone wrong has been drawing lots of love from critics and audiences alike, and based on this first Red Band trailer it’s not difficult to see why, as it seems to be a well acted, charming hood tale.
A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
Dope stars Shameik Moore, Kiersey Clemons, Tony Revolori, Kimberly Elise, A$AP Rocky, Blake Anderson, Keith Stanfield, Chanel Iman, Quincy Brown, and Zoë Kravitz. It is scheduled for limited release on June 19, 2015.
