When Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the anti-Bourne of the espionage genre, arrived to much acclaim last year, it seemed to herald in a new phase of slow burn spy thrillers that was all brains with very little brawn. But while Tomas Alfredsson’s take on John Le Carré’s tale was brilliant, Anton Corbijn’s The American was already burning slow a few years before that.
Now Corbijn is tackling his own Le Carré story with a killer cast – seriously, look at those names! – and it’s looking just as good.
Note: This is not the officially released trailer but rather the “sizzle reel” that was being shown around to investors at Cannes last week. BleedingCool managed to get hold of it and upload it, followed by a few more people doing the same, but it’s probably only a matter of time before it gets pulled down, so watch it while you can.
Adapted from the best-seller by master spy novelist John le Carré, “A Most Wanted Man” takes place in present day Hamburg, Germany where a mysterious, tortured and near-dead half-Chechen, half-Russian man on the run arrives in the city’s Islamic community desperate for help and looking to recover his late Russian father’s ill-gotten fortune. Nothing about this young man seems to add up; is he a victim or a thief or, worse still, an extremist intent on destruction? Drawn into this web of intrigue is a private British banker and a young female lawyer determined to defend the defenseless. All the while, they are being watched by the brilliant, roguish chief of a covert German spy unit (Hoffman), who fights to put the pieces together as the clock ticks.
We received a request to remove this trailer due to copyright infringement… but it’s already gone from YouTube.. so that’s a thing
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Willem Dafoe and Daniel Bruhl? Hell, I’d pay to just watch these guys stand around and talk. Which, if Corbijn’s past action-free movies are to be taken into account, is probably what most of this movie will be about, which surprisingly, is a very good thing.
A Most Wanted Man currently does not have a release date.
