Mads Mikkelsen. Eva Green. Those two names was all I needed to here to perk my ears up at Salvation, an upcoming Danish-produced western that sees TV’s Hannibal Lecter swapping out his silver cutlery and particular diet for a six shooter and and some justice and Vanessa Ives swapping out her ancient gowns and wistful stares for… well, actually those are pretty much the same here. But hey, at least she’s not possessed by the devil!
She is hanging out with a Red Devil though, in ex-Manchester United football legend Eric Cantona – yes, you read that correctly – who rounds out this gritty western’s very interesting cast with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Surprising actors aside, director Kristian Levring seems to be producing a proper throwback here to those classic westerns, where heroes with little words but lots of bullets get the job done as brutally as possible. And I cannot wait to see more of it.
Paying tribute to the classic western with inspiration from the Nordic sagas, The Salvation takes place in the 1870s America. When settler John (Mads Mikkelsen) kills his family’s murderer, he unleashes the fury of notorious gang leader Delarue (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Betrayed by his corrupt and cowardly community, the peaceful pioneer must turn vengeful hunter, slay the outlaws, and cleanse the town’s black heart. The Salvation is an epic tale of revenge, lost love and greed.
The Salvation is scheduled for simultaneous release on VOD and in theatres on February 27, 2015. No local release dates have been set yet.

Isn’t this the one that was shot in Jo’burg?

Yep, it’s the one. I wish it had been shot in Cape Town, because then I could have made jokes about Hannibal eating a gatsby with some Fresca.

Danish? So if Italian westerns are spaghetti westerns, these would be frikkadel westerns?
