William Fichtner confirms his role as the Shredder in TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES

2 min read

If you grew up in the same time period that the staff of the Movies did, then you most likely also played Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles during lunch. In fact, we still do to this day. While some things are better left unsaid, like Lourens happening to always be wearing an orange burglar mask, it’s safe to say that we all had our favourite character at least.

For me, that was Shredder. Who would have thought that a character voiced by Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air could be so badass. And now, William Fichtner is joining that hall of shredded fame that also includes former pro wrestler Kevin Nash and James Saito.

TMNT Fichtner (2)

Having been announced as a cast member who would be playing a role that was described as being of “iconic stature” (Splinter/Baxter Stockman/Bebop?), Fichtner then went onto confirm that he’d be donning cheese graters onto his arms as the primary antagonist of the Turtles. “I play Shredder,” Fichtner said to HuffPost TV Canada.

It is cool. It’s one of those things that came along where I thought, ‘Really? Let me think about this for a minute.’ [Laughs] Then I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, this sounds like a journey.’ I’m very glad that it worked out, I’m really glad that I’m doing it.

Make no mistake, Fichtner is a great actor, having appeared in a wide variety of roles across film and television. As for how they’re going to convince audiences that this is a man who can handle four mutated amphibians at the same time who also happens to run a ninja organization of note? Beats me.

But if Paul “Same height as me” Giamatti can look threatening as the Rhino in the set photos released from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, then I’m certain that director Jonathan Liebesman can magic/CGI something up. The heroes in a half-shell will be cowabungaing into cinemas next year June.
