A Gearbox developed Call of Duty?

Throw your half-eaten, tea-time ham and cheese sandwiches at me if you like, but I actually enjoyed Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. It was great leave-your-brain-disengaged, popcorn holiday entertainment and I had a good time playing it. It’s certainly no game of the year or anything, but it was fun to play. I will say though that the whole thing’s becoming just a bit too familiar, and perhaps the series is in need of a third studio to rejuvenate things. Gearbox, developers of Borderlands, could have been that studio.

In an interview with Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford that they say was conducted before the release of Modern Warfare 2, but curiously only published now, German gaming site Krawall (who could totally be making this up) says that Gearbox was in a position to develop a Call of Duty game – but turned it down because they didn’t believe it was a challenging enough prospect.

"I don’t think there’s anything to accomplish there,” says Pitchford, as translated in shinobi602’s forum post on NeoGAF. “I think if I was only in it for the money I would’ve done that.[…] I think to do Call of Duty right you need to do what needs to be done and there are a lot of people who can do that. For us it wouldn’t add to our credibility, it wouldn’t move us forward. There would be no significant challenge that would be gratifying to overcome."

What do you think? Could Gearbox have turned Call of Duty on its head – or is it probably best that Gearbox avoided becoming another damned COD studio to give us Borderlands 2 instead?

As much as I love Gearbox, it’s probably worth noting that not everything they touch turns to gold. They’re responsible for resurrecting the godawful Duke Nukem Forever
