Dark indie roguelike The Binding of Isaac is based, loosely, on a biblical story. Its features Isaac, a young and naked child trying to flee his mother who’s been told by “a voice from above” to sacrifice him. Touchy.

It seems it’s too touchy for Nintendo, who’s decided that the game won’t be gracing the 3DS’ eShop.

“After a long internal debate Nintendo has decided NOT to allow the Binding of Isaac on the 3DS,” Edmund McMillen, one of the pair who designed the game  tweeted. “As many assumed the reasons were due to the games ‘questionable religious content’”.

Nintendo apparently had no qualms with the implied child nudity or dark and mature themes – but religion? That’s just too taboo, something we discussed quite extensively yesterday. The guys at Valve aren’t quite as timid when it comes to potentially blasphemous content though.

“Thank GOD Steam exists!” he said. “Seriously though, I gotta again publicly thank Steam for fully supporting Isaac and not requiring ESRB or censoring its published games. Just one of many reasons why Steam is the top dog of digital distribution,” he affirmed, putting out more love for Valve’s digital distribution service.

When questioned about the game possibly showing up on a Sony platform, he said “we havent ever had any issues with sony in the past.” So, The Binding of Isaac hitting the Vita soon?
