E3 2012: The Last of Us

Though they faltered a bit with the demonstration of kid-oriented interactive book…thing, Wonderbook, Sony ended its impressive, spectacular conference with a bang – by showing a gameplay demonstration of Naughty dog’s incredible “The Last of Us.”

Our protagonists, Joel and Ellie begin demo as they head into a ruined, apocalyptic city overgrown with grass and moss. As they make their way across the city, it’s quiet and creepy…

Crawling out onto a rooftop, Joel is startled by voices from within a nearby building. Sure that the men are hostile, Joel sneaks inside and squeezes the life out of him before grabbing for his gun. It then gets decidedly darker in tone, and language.

In a room, Joel uses a molotov cocktail to immolate one of his attackers. Ellie joins the action by stabbing one the attackers from behind while Joel wrestles him to the ground. A whip with the a shotgun butt, and a shot later, and the demo comes to close.

The game looks both intense and visceral, far removed from the Uncharted Series’ levity.

Shotgun to the face!

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
