Epic: Next Gen consoles like high-end PCs

2 min read

We’ve been wondering about the capabilities of the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony for some time; based on their rumoured specs they appear to be little more than current mid-range PCs but, being dedicated hardware means you’re able to do more with it than comparative hardware in a PC environment. According to Epic’s Tim Sweeny next gen consoles will match high end PCs – and that’s got him excited.

We’re more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms," Sweeney told Edge. "What we’re doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it’s going to be awesome," he added.

Many, including myself, don’t really believe that the next generation of consoles will offer a much more visual clout than the current gen – but apparently that’s not the case.

"It’s going to be a substantial leap over the current generation," he said.

Of course, the cynical bastard in me wonders if it’s not in Sweeny’s best interests to start hyping this next-gen business. Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is arguably the most popular engine used in this generation’s games, and Epic’s biggest source of income. Of course they’d want people to be excited for the next gen, and the next generation of Unreal engine.

Here’s the Unreal Engine 4 at work. Let’s hope next gen games really do look like this.

  • That’s an awesome looking demo reel

    • That is why PC is waaay better than consoles in terms of technology. What you see on that reel has been possible on a PC for the past 4 years already. Not to mention that consoles of today can’t even handle the previous gen of the unreal engine properly

This made me think of Dark Souls and what Dark Souls 2 can be… Holding Thumbs!

  • Admiral Chief Erwin

See? Everyone wants to be like the PC

    • Willem Swanepoel

      hahaha… good one

    • Willem Swanepoel

so many down vote trolls on this post… ;-(

      • Admiral Chief Erwin

PPL are angry at the truth

  • The Guest

I think it’ll be more a case where they wont have to trim the game engines just to make console games run at 30fps anymore. That said I think the visual enhancement will be more than expected by most people.

  • In the future, there will be no more consoles, just different brands of PC’s with different peripherals and software and/or operating systems patented by different companies. Master Race domination 😛

    • Admiral Chief Erwin

Future looks pretty damn awesome, if I say so myself. And I do say so 😛

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

      Go PC!

      • Deon Steyn

Let me know how good GTA V is on the pc.

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

So glad I’m not a huge GTA fan since 3 then

          • Deon Steyn

What was wrong with San Andreas? I do agree that GTA 4 was a bit disappointing.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

San Andreas was ok but was the start of the downhill slide of the game for me

    • Deon Steyn

But all consoles are already a different brand of PC. It’s just a customized PC and the term console is used to define a machine for use primarily to play games on a TV.

    • Trevor Davies

“Master Race domination” is such an ugly phrase, I prefer “benevolent overlords.”

      • Deon Steyn

True. Master Race sounds like nazis.

      • that does sound awesome :O works for me!

    • calc

      You sure about that?

  • Willem Swanepoel

One cool thing about this next gen consoles is that they will be like a mid range PC. So you wont see so many console exclusive or one brand exclusive game anymore. Hopefully, this will be the end of the console exclusive games.

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Soooooo. Lemme get this straight? Next-Gen consoles will look like current-gen PC’s?

    • Admiral Chief Erwin

    • Admiral Chief Erwin

Also, its not trolling if its the truth :-

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Yeah, I mean if that’s what the Unreal engine looks like on current-gen PC’s and future-gen consoles, then imagine what that engine would look like on a next-gen PC!

        • Admiral Chief Erwin

          Real life HD

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Oh wait, we already have a glimpse of it:

  • Jonah Cash

Sauron waking up to start his domination of middle earth once more???? Mount Doom was a frosty old place before he woke up….

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

That’s one heck of a cool demo real. Really impressive gfx there.

  • FoxOneZA

Apparently the next gen will look next gen. Mind boggling, I know.

  • ALKi1234

When i compare this tech demo with Square Enix Luminous Next-Gen tech demo, then it’s not that impressive at all.It does look good, but coming from epic i expected allot more. They are claimed to be the pioneers of Graphics Engines?

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Then check their other one out:

      • ALKi1234

Sorry mate that was from Unreal Engine 3 and it’s a cut scene. Have you played Uncharted 3 yet?

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Didn’t say it’s UE4. Just simply pointed out what current tech is capable of already

      • Thats not unreal engine 4…What made you think it was UE4? I seriously dont understand people posting bullshit

        • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Dude, I wasn’t stating that it’s UE4. Read the original post. He said that he would expect better. So I simply showed a video whose graphics ARE better and showcases just what can be done even on an OLDER engine.

UE4 is still in early stages and if the Samaritan demo is what the UE3 can achieve then by logic (Which I thought people would actually use) it means that once the UE4 is utilised properly and refined that the graphics would be even better.

Please use some common sense. I didn’t state it’s the UE4. I just simply stated that it is something that looks a lot better. Even if it is older.

Sheesh. Burn a guy at the stake for showing what older tech is capable of. Well done you bloody troll

  • Banana Jim

I’m not a fan of the Unreal engine (Bloom covers all), but I’ll admit… this looks damn impressive.
