FFD: Are gamers entitled whinebags?

FFD01082014

I’m not sure there’s a more acerbic, vociferous bunch of people than gamers who have internet access. While it’s obviously not something that affects everybody who’s ever picked up a controller or used office equipment for pixel-perfect headshots, there’s a rather large proportion of gamers who it seems, feel that the $60 they spend on a game entitles them to developers’ first born children.

Gamers will get their knickers twisted over just about anything. We’ll whine about how the games included as a bonus to our subscriptions just aren’t triple A titles, or how the brand new summer sale offering huge discounts isn’t quite discounty enough, because 75% off isn’t even sale.

We’ll whine about how the add on DLC to a game that a team spent months working on isn’t worth an extra $5 because we paid for the game and how dare a company charge extra money for extra content. How dare they, the evil capitalist pigs. Gamers want everything now, and they want it for free!

Famously, gamers made Bioware create a whole extended ending to Mass Effect 3 because they weren’t happy with the game’s tricolore ending.

“Gamers are absurdly entitled, but I think they got there because we ask so much money from them every step of the way” said one developer working for “a large publisher.”  “No one’s demanding reshoots for the final Matrix, because it only cost you 10 bucks to see it. Sometimes I think we in the industry lose sight of what it’s like to pay $60 for a piece of entertainment.”

Another famous example of gamer entitlement rearing its ugly head is when Call of Duty players issued death threats to the game’s designers because they were making changes to how certain guns operate.

Of course, without whiny gamers, we’d still be stuck with an Xbox one that phoned home every 24 hours. Are gamers a particularly whiny, entitled bunch – or is it really just a vocal minority making us all look bad?

Without even reading the article I can honestly say that between 1/3rd and 1/4 are whinebags, unfortunately those are the ones who get noticed and give the rest of us bad names.

Yeah you just have to look at the regular that commenters on LG.Net, they might seem to be that majority (unemployed triedhards, just judging by how often they post) but the fact is they make up only a small portion of the people who visit, and hopefully read the articles, on this site. It’s often the small vocal [extremist] minority that gets all the attention.

I think the first thing to do is draw the between what being a whine bag is and what genuinely voicing your opinion is.

the “ERMEGERD TEH COMPANY SUXORZ” comments that are in abundance are the whine bags, someone genuinely stating their opinion or displeasure with a matter and being able to back it up are not so much whining as opening it up for debate.

Like most cases though the, more lacking in the intellect department tend to howl louder than those who actually have something worth while to say.

    HOWEVER

    Everybody likes to Whine…

Even PC gamers… (We HATE Sloppy ports!) (Don’t Support DRM. etc.)

But there are to sides to everything. (i.e… Oh So you hate DRM, how big is your Steam Library?)

Case in Point: Assasin’s Creed, they’ve always been badly optimised messes at launch, At least in my experience, I’d rather just not have them on PC…. You Can’t berate what you don’t have on your platform… And Many games have been Consoel exclusive in the past. in fact, back in the 8 and 16 bit eras, there was barely a PC version of a console game, and vice versa. and everyone was happy…. i think, It was the 80s and 90s, I was a kid, and everyone was on coke….

Whining over a gun that’s “nerfed” is juvenile. Being promised an ending where every decision affects the outcome to a trilogy of games and buying all three games and DLC (so that’s more than $180) but failing to deliver is not juvenile. The Matirx made no such promises by the way.

Right. Here goes. It depends. One the one hand we are consumers, and as consumers have rights. You can argue those rights but nonetheless they are there (regional specific of course). If developers have realised they are able to offer us our cake but at only 3/4 of what it should be and then sell the last slice at a later date to make more, then we are more than entitled to complain, bitch and moan. On the other end of the spectrum you have people who get great content for $60, you know, a full game, and then scream bloody murder when extra DLC comes out that was made as EXTRA (Borderlands content, not the cluster fuck of a level cap, I mean the extra 4/5 hours of play). The issue here is to what standard we hold a game up to. Because of different genres it’s almost impossible to set a bench mark. RPS’s are much longer, FPS usually faster and shorter, puzzle games? Where does it stop? Add to that the piracy mentality and you have a whole bag of trouble. I strongly think that developers should allow us to play demos. ‘Try this for 30 minutes, it goes on for another 8’. If you like, buy, if not, don’t. Also, internet young trolls like to shout about anything…

There are loads of whinebags out there. They the ones who gets noticed for obvious reasons. I just think that if we actually stopped concentrating too much on wanting constant innovation in games that we can actually enjoy playing the games themselves? I know its not like that for all games, but lately i been thinking that we (including myself) end up concentrating too much on what we think should be right in a game. Fair enough we can give constructive criticism to make a game better, but I just think for example: Playing RE5 was good, but not as great as RE4 for obvious reason being that it was far too action orientated, but if we look back say 10 years ago in gaming. We never really took note about how a game should evolve in such a drastic measure that it changes the almost the game completely. We get comments like…. looks more of the same…. no innovation, but i think a great story backed with fun gameplay should be the top of it all. Not constant major innovation. I do agree on improvements though. Like id play 20 castlevania games if they all made the same way as Symphony of the night. Just with improved graphics here and there, new/extra of everything and a continuing interesting story etc etc. My 2cents and a bit…

Llet’s look at DLC one more time and tell me if this is whining :

    1. I believe on disc DLC that can only be unlocked by paying should be called Ransomware seeing how you only download a small file to unlock it.

    2. DLC being anounced before a game releases is truly a cash grab, I mean if developers had time to create paid DLC that’s
released at the same time as the new game, then that effort should have
been put towards the game itself.

    3. Costumes and additional gameplay modes used to be included in games to make it seem like the game has more value, DLC now.

    4. We used to be able to create or download maps for FPS games, DLC as well. They even charge you for a map used in previous entries.

Do I first need to buy a game for $60 before I can whine about DRM. Here I’m whining about no DRM so that I can buy games for $60.

We live in a time where the games marketed is flooded with shit games, incomplete games, bugger as hell games, on disc DLC, the game is not even released and there’s lots of DLC.

If the games market was flooded with good games, well made games, I doubt there will be a lot of whining.

If you look at games like Diablo 3 and Simcity 5 you can see that game developers are not making games for gamers. They making games for corporate greed. So keep on whining, I say. If there is a lot of whining then it means there is a big problem.

Oh I doubt very much you would not have people complaining even when the games are good. In fact that is often where the problems start. Bad game gets quickly noted and people move on.

Good games means time investment and if you change that…then you usually have hell to pay.

Mass Effect series; Diablo; Dragon Age 1 – you will find many people complaining about any game is the point. Someone somewhere is going to dislike something…nature of life.

I liked Mass Effect 1 and I’m sure others like it for being a nice western RPG. But Mass Effect 2 went for a more action adventure type than a true RPG.
So if change the core of what people like then yes lot’s of whining.
Mass Effect 1 was a good game, so I can’t say Mass Effect 3 was better than that. Mass Effect 3 was the height of whining but for good reason.

Dragon Age 1 I liked and if you look at what they did to Dragon Age 2 then the whining was justified.

Diablo 3 deserved all the whining it got. Error 37. Single player game, forced online lag.

So Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age 2, Diablo 3 – not good games. Too many problems.

“corporate greed” You do realize that making a AAA game actually costs a shitload of money right?(Hell, even publishing on ID@Xbox is ridiculously expensive as I’m led to believe…) Developers have to make money, they simply cannot give it away at a loss or for free like you want them to! Big developers actually have what they call “share holders” and these are the guys backing them with the much needed cash. Now if these investors or share holders do not get a good enough return on their money they will simply take it somewhere else and you will have no games to whine about anymore! Simple as that! This is the entertainment industry, it’s a niche market! If you really want to whine about something then please focus on everyday necessities like water and electricity, food & transport costs etc.

As you just said. They making games to make money for shareholders. So usually games come out bland, rushed, a copy of other games, buggy, ect.

If developers can take their time and focus on improving the medium or making the medium better, then you will find more people supporting the game for a longer period of time. Which then makes the shareholders more money.

But the model now is to release, release, release, to make as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time. With that model you won’t find a lot of good games, maybe a gem here and there.

GTA is a good example of making a good game and still making money from that game years later.
The Witcher 2 did’nt sell so well when it was released but years later the game still kept on selling.

Make a good game and it will still be selling years later.
Make a bad game and market the shit out of it for day 1 sales . Does that not sound like the industry of games we in now.

As I said it’s a niche market, no necessity here so just don’t pre order or buy games on release. Wait for demos/reviews and make up your mind later. Vote with your wallet, if you don’t give them your money, that said developers will either go belly up or get their shit together very quickly!

When you know the developers are going to take their time and going to produce really good games, always thinking about the gamers who are going to buy the games, then you support them.

CD Projekt RED. Why do I want to support these guys with over R2000 , pre ordering 8 months before release.

I won’t buy EA nor do their games interest me at all.
I won’t buy Ubisoft nor do their games interest me at all.
I won’t buy Activision nor do their games interest me at all.
I won’t buy “insert DRM developer” even though some of the games raises some interest.

So to me it sounds like EA, Ubisoft, Activision needs to develop for that niche market and not just buy up and destroy those good developers out there.

The problem for me lies in the fact that it’s becoming like the boy that cried wolf. There is a minority of Beliebers that whine about everything and because of that the real complaints are lost in all the noise.

Agreed, it becomes difficult picking out useful criticism when all you hear is “that game sucks”. What sucked about it? Was it too easy, too difficult? Was it bad performance that prevented you from enjoying it, poor story, poor level design, did it not improve on it’s predecessor, or did it change too much and lose it’s unique appeal (in the case of a sequels).

Hmmmm….. interesting topic, I believe that companies have changed focus from what a full product is, so much so that the lines between a complete game and the DLC it gets set up for become greyed out to the point where there is no differentiation between what is actually delivered on day one as to what it should actually be… It is one thing to have a team develop DLC content while a game is being tested etc., during that time the devs literally sit and wait for feedback, but when the teams’ focus is shifted from the entire game being complete and whether the DLC has to be complete is something of another nature… And yes, gamers are whiny, but for a good reason, if you buy a Bugatti Veyron on pre order and when it comes out after, I don’t know, 6 millennia and it turns out to be a set of roller skates strapped to a V8, you probably won’t complain about the performance, but hell, the ride comfort would be atrocious….

Yes, I still agree. Although I think there are times where complaints are valid and other times when they are ridiculous. I think that we are entitled to receive a game that works, that provides decent entertainment, value and that will be supported for a reasonable time by the developers. Extra DLC that launches on the same day as the game is one example of things that irritate me. Yes making games is a business but it’s very difficult to stay in business when you alienate your customers through bad decisions.

I think if we really want to improve things we should be able to communicate directly with Dev’s and have a positive and negative feedback section. At least that way we can have a structured forum for discussion.

Troll’s will troll, nothing we can do about that, but at the same time, the troll’s make the most noise and give all of the other decent gamers a bad name.

Better a vocal consumer-base than a bunch of mute retards who accept getting rogered by greedy suits, in a dirty alley.

If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, the xboner would have boned us all with its arrogant anti-consumer 24 hour check-in DRM and severe restrictions on the use of used games. If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, install-limits on PC titles that YOU BOUGHT would have become the norm (remember EA and Spore?). If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, SONY would have gotten away with installing PC-crippling rootkits ON YOUR COMPUTERS from MUSIC CDs THAT YOU LEGITIMATELY BOUGHT! If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, Ubisoft’s always online would have become the standard for PC gaming. If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, EA would have screwed us all over with even more online-DRM. If it wasn’t for entitled whinebags, Activision-Blizzard would have laughed all the way to the bank on the back of broken online game. If it wasn’t for “entitled whinebags”, Bethesda, DiCE etc. would never have to fix their games. ETC. ETC. ETC. ETC.

Nay, lads. I say… BLESS THOSE “entitled whinebags”!! For they keep the greedy corporate asswipes of the world on their toes.
