2012

The number of remaining high profile game releases for the rest of the year is pretty close to zero – which means that we’re able to look at the gaming year as a whole. every year we’re told that the next year will be the greatest year for gaming ever! Has 2012 delivered?

We’ve seen Sony release its next-generation handheld, the PlayStation Vita – which hasn’t quite done the numbers that Sony’d hoped – ad we’ve seen two hardware releases from Nintendo; the supersized 3DSXL and the newly released Wii U. It’s still a little early to tell how that’s going to do – but all three of those system could do with more games.

As far as games for systems go we have been treated to a few gems – like Borderlands 2, Mass Effect 3, current darling Far Cry 3, excellent downloadable titles like Journey and pleasant surprise hits like Sleeping Dogs, Spec Ops and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. There have also been games that haven’t quite lived up to their hype, like Dishonored, and Assassin’s Creed 3.

Compare that all to last year, which gave us a lot of threes; Uncharted 3, Battlefield 3, Saints Row The Third and Gears of War 3 as well as a lot of skythings, in Skyrim, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure.

So what do you think? Has 2012 stacked up? And what then, is the best game you’ve played from this year?

Next year could be even better, with the possible releases of the next-gen PlayStations and Xboxes. That’s if the world doesn’t end in two weeks, that is.
