Gamespot Editor Fired Over Kane & Lynch Review?

So this is disturbing isn’t it… If you haven’t heard yet it is rumoured that Gamespot reviewer, Jeff Gerstmann, has been fired because he gave Kane & Lynch a bad review which was then published amongst a huge amount of Kane & Lynch advertising…

Penny-Arcade have been quick to describe the situation in their own special way and Kotaku, who appeared to have broken the story, has a Digg count of 1512 (and quickly climbing) at the time of writing.

I have always been a fan of Gamespot but unless this turns out to be a complete hoax I know that I won’t be believing any of their future reviews.

However if these publishers want to send some of that huge advertising budget this way I can still be bought…. I’ll even give Lost Planet a 10/10 for enough money 🙂

After I saw what the dude that reviewed Lair over at Gamespot looked like, I swore off anything to do with them!

I think it is wrong to judge the guys ability to review games by his physical attributes to be perfectly honest.

    Just my opinion:

Its worth noting that at the time of this comment, the review is still there. It doesn’t make logical sense that they would fire the reviewer but not remove/replace the review if Eidos actually “persuaded” Gamespot.

@Thomeval, that is a good point. A supposed insider at Gamespot has said this has happened because they didn’t want the other reviewers to go on strike so they waited until after the last major game review went up and then fired him…

They can’t take the review down now otherwise it would be blatantly obvious what happened… There is a lot more information about this here

This is the reason I only use Actiontrip for my reviews. Those guys are funny and I find that the Europeans have a lot more in common to us in their taste of games.

Yea, Lazy, im not a dick, but its like bokka says, I cant see that guy having anything in common with myself and so I cant see his review being very accurate to me!

I noticed something else while reading the comments regarding this… incident on Gamespot that certainly doesn’t help their credibility. Firstly, according to the comments (here: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183603.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;1 ), the game had a video review but it was pulled for an unknown reason. This is also evident from the game tags of the game (look under all tags).

Secondly, although the original review score stands for this game, the review itself was “updated”, apparently ” to include differences between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions and a clarification on the game’s multiplayer mode.” Did anyone see this review before it was updated?

Regardless of whether this whole scenario is actually true or not, its definitely having an effect on player reviews. At last check, Gamespot users rated an average of 2.6 (!) for this game (compared to Gamespot’s 6.0), with almost 75% calling it “abysmal”.
