How big’s that Wii U update?

Anybody who’s been following Wii U news, intent on getting one when its finally available here at the end of the month would know to expect a system update, adding a couple of promised features that weren’t included in the box.  So how big’s that patch?

Oh boy…it’s HUGE (That’s what she said  – admittedly, not to me.)

According to a number of users who picked up the system yesterday following its US release they were greeted with a pretty substantial, compulsory 5GB firmware update.

The update allows users to access online features, visit the Miiverse and transfer data from a Wii to the Wii U; all things that were promised, but had to be added in post-release.

I hope this isn’t a portent of what to expect in the future from Wii U updates; not even PlayStation 3 updates have been nearly this bad – and just about anybody who owns a PS3 will tell you that before incremental patching was implemented, it was pretty bad – but even they were never really bigger than 200Mb. 5 Gigs is just mental.

There doesn’t seem to be any way of downloading the patch from the web and sharing it as you can with the Ps3 and Xbox 360 either. If you’re picking up a Wii U later this month be prepared to spend a heck of a lot of time watching a progress bar instead of actually, y’know, playing games.
