If any single dish could be called Durban’s pride, it would have to be the Bunny chow. I’m not sure which fellow decided to stuff curry into a hollowed-out loaf of bread, but that man was a genius.
Finding a decent Bunny in landlocked Gauteng is a tricky thing though, and while none can really compare with the genuine deal – there’s a pretty good approximation available…in Sandton of all places. While hardly haute cuisine, there’s a certain something special about a good bunny, and if you’re in JHB, the best one that I’ve found comes from the simple-named, and simple in general Curry-n-All, Located in Sandton Court on the corner of Rivonia and South Road, the unassuming little joint serves bunnies with a carrot and chilli sambal. Pick veg, mutton or chicken, and be prepared for a runny nose – and not, as its scruffy interior might suggest – a runny bum. The place gets pretty damned full at lunch time, particularly on a Friday afternoon, which is a testament to just how good it is.
I’m not usually one for Durban-styled curries, favouring the anglicised northern Indian stuff you’d get in proper restaurants, but this is proper good stuff.
