Is this the game that’ll get you to get an Xbox One?

If there are any games that are making me want to buy an Xbox One, they’d be Remedy’s Quantum Break, and a brand new Gears of War. Thankfully, neither is coming in the immediate future, so I have time to save for an Xbox One yet. I got to see the game close up at Gamescom, with Remedy talking me through it. And now, you get to see pretty much the same thing I did.

In this 16 minute extended demo via IGN, you get to see what has me so keen on Quantum Break. It’s very much the sort of thing Remedy has become known for; darker, moody atmosphere blended with great gameplay and narrative ideas that oftentimes leave you scratching your head. This is the first time that some of the stranger, platforming bits have been shown – where Jack Joyce has to use his time-bending abilities to traverse the landscape.  Beyond its interesting mechanics and very probably amazing story, it’s one of the best looking games I’ve seen.  If you’ve been looking for even the slightest excuse to justify an Xbox One, this is probably it.

The game also interestingly mixes it up with a sort of  faux, live-action TV series, that plays out in an episodic way –  breaking up the game with a look at the word through the bad guys’ eyes. Check it out.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
