No plans for next-gen GTA…yet

Much to my own surprise, considering just how little I enjoyed GTA IV, I am digging the heck out of GTA V. It’s just more vibrant less gritty, and decidedly more fun. What Rockstar has managed to wrought with the current consoles is quite frankly staggeringly impressive – but you can’t help but wonder what a next generation GTA would be like.

Speaking to The Guardian, Rockstar’s Dan Houser said that while the developer was interested in shiny new tech, they had no real plans of doing anything with it yet, as far as GTA was concerned.

“Of course we’re interested. But no, not in terms of GTA, because we’re always working on the current game. We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we’re working on further down the line. We don’t have another GTA in development, we don’t work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing.

“So, in terms of GTA, no. We get pitched by the hardware manufacturers on what they’re planning to do and our tech guys come up with ideas on how that could be used. Does this influence design decisions. Of course. But we’re not sat there fantasising about 10 years down the line. We’re so busy with what we’re doing right now.”

There’s still no word on whether or not Rockstar will release an up-scaled, higher-def version of current videogame darling GTA V on any of the next-gen consoles or PC, though there are signs that it’s happening.

On that note; what city would you like to see the next GTA based in? If we’re going to be revisiting previous locations, and as much as GTA has become about satirised slices of Americana, I’d really love for a GTA London.
