Remember when Scott Cawthon released Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 and said it was the last chapter of the original story? Well, he wasn’t lying. Yes, he did go on to release Five Nights at Freddy’s World (which was er… a little disatrous), but true to the word of its creator, it was a spinoff title that had basically nothing to do with the franchise’s main narrative.
That was then however. Mr Cawthon seems to have now had a change of heart, because based on the new teaser image that’s popped up on his website, it looks like a new, core Five Nights at Freddy’s game is on the way (via Destructoid):
As you may (or may not) know, the Five Nights at Freddy’s games are all about a fictional chain of restaurants called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Though the story is never told explicitly, dedicated fans have pieced together the lore of the franchise (or at least theorized on it endlessly). If memory serves (please feel free to correct me), there are two of these restaurants. Based on the teaser image above, it seems that there is another.
Or, sister location could mean that there is an entirely different restaurant – a sister chain if you will. To be honest, the lurking face definitely seems to be an animatronic of sorts, but it doesn’t look anything like Freddy. Hell, if I had to hazard a guess, I’d say it looks female. Maybe Freddy has/had a sister? We’ll just have to wait and see. For all we know, this new title won’t even be called Five Nights at Freddy’s (maybe its name is actually just Sister Location).
Anyways, why did Scott decide to make another game in this universe? A fan asked him in the Steam forums, and got the following response…
I never said I couldn’t change my mind. 😉 It’s not like every time I speak I’m engraving it into a stone tablet somewhere.
So no significant reason really. Scott just felt like making something new I guess. I wonder how this game will fit into the overall story? It’s going to open up a whole lot of new doors for new theories on the franchise though, that’s for sure!
