There’s no perfect character in Mortal Kombat 11, but there is a perfect bastard. Whose name just so happens to rhyme with Freshly Whim. You see, this fine piece of work likes to play as Liu Kang and keep you at a distance with an unlimited supply of high and low fireballs. It’s almost as if this particular slice of roadkill would rather be playing Street Fighter and has decided to use the cheapest attacks in the game to keep player away, and should they manage to hop in close enough he’ll unleash a barrage of screaming bicycle kicks at you. (Ed’s note: It’s called zoning, and you should learn to handle that).
I say this, because when it comes to Mortal Kombat 11’s most used characters, Liu Kang is sitting at the top. Albeit on a throne that is this close to being usurped by Noob Saibot. Over on Event Hubs, the current tier listing has Liu Kang and Noob Saibot battling it out for the top spot, and it’s not hard to see why. Compared to his Mortal Kombat X incarnation, this version of Liu Kang feels more well-rounded than ever before.
While there is a slight telegraph to his attacks, Kang is able to work at pretty much any range thanks to the blistering arsenal he possesses and the sheer ease with which players can chain in meter-burn special moves at the end of combos. As for Noob Saibot, he’s a lean mean teleporting machine who favours offensive players perfectly. While the wind-up on his combos is odd, he’s able to execute some high damage special move chains which can easily shave large chunks of your health bar away no matter where you are on the screen.
Also, I’m shockingly bad at defending against those damn teleports of his. Here’s the current top ten list (which is subject to WILD change), as of May 13:
- Liu Kang
- Noob Saibot
- Erron Black
- Kung Lao
That’s…not a surprising list at all. You’ve got newcomers such as Geras, who feel tailor-made for competitive play, while anyone playing as Kung Lao has probably seen one too many Ip Man movies. Hey, don’t judge me: Those Wing Chun combos never get old and they’re kind of rhythmic to listen to. If there is a surprise on that list, I’d say that it’s Sub-Zero.
Mortal Kombat’s most classic of characters, I just cannot get the hang of this frigid bastard. He feels slow, the wind-up to his specials is torturous and his selection of combos feel sparse. Of course, I’m the worst Mortal Kombat player in recorded history so what do I know. I’m personally favouring Shao Kahn when I do play, as he has one of the best uppercut punishment attacks in the game, and his brute force combos favour my style of focusing on the core attributes of a character, perfectly.
So who are you jamming as currently, and who do you reckon is the best player in the Mortal Kombat 11 metagame? Sound off below.
