What’s the most played PC game?

If you’ve ever wondered just how popular free-to-play titles – the sort that hook you like a sample drug before knifing you in the kidneys for your money – wonder no more. According to data extracted from millions of X-fire accounts, the free-to-play DOTA clone League of Legends have proven itself to be more popular than you might imagine. In fact, it’s the most played game on the PC at the moment.

X-fire and the DFC’s data shows that League of Legends, over the last year, has had nearly 1.3 billion hours of logged playtime in North America and Europe – putting it at number one. The second most popular Pc game is exactly the one you’d expect; World of Warcraft – with 622 logged hours. Of course the data is a bit skewed – because the recently released clicky-hacky-slashy-looty Diablo 3 takes pride at fifth place – with 172 million hours played already.

"The fact that online games such League of Legends eclipsed more than a billion hours of online game time in a year is simply incredible, and a testament to the fundamental shift currently sweeping through the games industry. By comparison, Bungie recently announced that the Halo franchise surpassed two billion hours of online play, but that’s over a period of seven years." DFC Intelligence boss David Cole said.

Here’s the list of the most popular PC games for the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 – as pulled from over 21 million active X-fire accounts. Probably worth noting that X-fire, the game browser and messaging system isn’t used by all Pc gamers – so the data provides but a small slice of the PC gamer pie – and doesn’t even scratch the surface of the millions upon millions of Chinese and Korean PC gamers playing those bizarre Asian MMO’s – or even Facebook games like *ugh* Farmville for that matter.

  1. League of Legends: 1,292,502,456

  4. Heroes of Newerth: 184,520,156
