Dreamhack 2013

DreamHack has begun in Sweden, and I already told you that two of our local guys will be competing in the Quake Live tournament, but that’s not all that’s going on. Check out all this eSports!

Running from 28 November through 1 December, DreamHack is the largest digital festival. Sure, there’s tons of eSports going on, but they also have a LAN, expo, shopping and performances. It sounds like rAge supercharged. With such a huge event, their tournament has lured the best of the best to compete.

First billing was actually given to StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. With a prize of 500 000 SEK, approximately R750k, top players from around the world (but particularly Korea) will be vying for the top spot. Big names such at Hyun, Stardust, and SOS will be showing off their skills.

Dota 2 is up next, offering a $50k prize and featuring top teams Alliance, Na’Vi, Fnatic and Team Liquid. The even bigger MOBA, League of Legends has a prize pool of 195 000 SEK (approx R300k) and will see top team SK Gaming take on the likes of tRICKED eSport and Storm Games Clan. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive show off an impressive $250,000 prize featuring teams from Fnatic, SK-Gaming, Na’Vi and Ninjas in Pyjamas.

Rounding out the games, we’ve got Heroes of Newerth, Battlefield 4, Quake Live and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. There is certainly a wide variety of games being played at this event, and it’s interesting to see that the biggest prize pools aren’t for the MOBA. I’m particularly surprised by the amount of money up for grabs for CS:GO.

You can catch all the action on DreamHack TV through twitch. You can also be sure to catch all the Quake Live stuff on this twitch stream. I hope our local guys perform well – we’re all rooting for them!

We don’t call them peasants anymore. They’re next gen now. Certainly we ought to let them move up the social ladder? At LEAST call them proletariats. 😉
