Hatred, the ultra-violent killing spree shooter on Steam Greenlight, has had its fair share of controversy. The game has already been pulled from Steam once, only to return a day later after a massive outcry from fans over censorship. It rocketed to the top of the Greenlight charts, but now it could face another hurdle it possibly can’t surmount.
Hatred has been officially classified in the United States, picking up the dreaded Adults-Only rating. Adults-Only differs from the ESRB’s Mature rating, being kept aside for games with explicit scenes of violence or sexual content. Only a handful of games have ever received this rating, and most tend to alter their content to get it back down to Mature. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Manhunt II and Fahrenheit are prime examples.
The issue comes down to the sale of Adult-Only games. Getting a game hosted for distribution with such a rating is a tricky affair, which is why developers often go back and cut content. Just a few months ago Steam pulled a Greenlight title, Seduce Me, for Adult-Only content. In fact, Steam has a habit of not selling titles that pick up this rating, which could be a very big problem for Hatred.
It’s a problem that doesn’t escape the developers either. In a post on the game’s official forums:
I would prefer to get a standard M+ rating, because with AO we will have problems to get to consoles in the future, but on the other hand I think you guys (our fans) would be disappointed with it.
The game hasn’t yet been rated by PEGI, which could prove as another avenue to get the game hosted in regions that don’t recognise the Adults-Only classification. Destructive Creative points out that San Andreas is still sold via Steam after receiving the same rating, but Rockstar did edit the “Hot Coffee” minigame out in order to drop back down to Mature.
So Hatred could potentially find itself off Steam again if Valve decides to stick with their past decisions. That’s unless the game is censored in order to reclassify with a lower rating. Still, that doesn’t stop the game from being distributed via other means, but skipping on Steam is usually a death sentence for most titles.

Any responsible parent will monitor what their brood are up to. The issue is kids have a habit of somehow being more savvy pertaining to all things tech. Also, Many become rebellious and go against their parents in some way in their development and growth. The obvious problem is a 13 year old would not think twice about sharing this with all his or her mates at the next lan. At that age, kids are not able to forsee the consequences of their actions. The issue is also the kind of blowback this will have on the game industry in the long term. If fox news used their platform as they have in recent times to blame games for gun violence, This game would serve them well. These developers also foolishly associated themselves with right wing fringe groups for ”marketing purposes” and when the mainstreams absorbs this, the game industry looks dodge. This is interactive, Not passive.

Nope, I have learned that in life, sometimes your own principles need to be expressed. I would have defended the hell out of this game 10 years ago. I have since realised that we are so de-sensitized to violence and hatred that anything goes. This game, like anything else you don’t want to see in this world, doesn’t have to be played by you. Everything from Tellytubbies to XXX back shelf hardcore has a rating. It’s up to you to decide what content you want to see and avoid the rest. The ratings help you to decide that. If your kids get hold of stuff that is not rated for them, it’s your fault and you should deal with them however you like. It is not the role of the state to nanny your children. Banning content amounts to censorship and censorship is bad. Don’t rely on the state to protect your kids. (before anyone goes trolling down this road this comment excludes the obviously illegal content involving children, that stuff deserves the death penalty)

Lesson from today, I lost my cool. This was wrong yet it also shows that if you have a opinion that is not mainstream, You open yourself up to a world of pain. Buy Hatred if you like it, That is your right. My only comment would be to judge your own reactive behaviour and wonder why a game that will polarize society is worthy of your unwavering support. I only ask that people do a little introspection. When you think that someone needs to chill for holding a virtue, Maybe there is a genuine concern for the lack of humanity in the world right now. The game is a reflection of our attitudes towards each other. Why would you want to go around and kill random people ? Why did I feel compelled to react so badly ?
