The Xbox One backwards compatibility library grew this week, with two new additions added to the mix. First up, was one of the last great games from 3D Realms in the form of the gloriously gory gravity-tripper Prey. Originally released in 2006, it was the kind of shooter that would have you hurling chunks for all the right reasons. The real gem though, is 2010’s Mafia 2.

The Xbox One has added the best Splinter Cell game to its ranks. It’s Splinter Cell Conviction guys, Geoff and his Chaos Theory be damned. Conviction for life, now and forever. Back in 2010, this was the knees of the bees.

With Microsoft still working on bringing backwards compatibility for their original Xbox to the Xbox One, a leaked list might have revealed the first batch of supported classic titles.

Speaking to Wired, Microsoft games boss Phil Spencer said that backwards compatibility is good for preservation, and "playing the games of our past."

Enjoy the console of tomorrow, and the games of yesterday. Yup, not content to just have Xbox 360 games made backwards compatible on the Xbox One, Microsoft has announced that the OG generation is headed to that family of consoles as well. The original Xbox was home to plenty of classic games, and Xboss Phil Spencer can’t wait for a new generation to enjoy them again.

PlayStation fans have been wanting something a bit more concrete in terms of backwards compatibility, and while PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan has acknowledged those calls for the system to start offering some proper legacy support for games, he reckons that even if they came up with a solution it wouldn’t be used all that often.

Turns out that making a classic game backwards compatible on Xbox One isn’t as easy as you think it is. Technical hurdles are one thing, but limitations and publisher relationships? That’s a whole other barrel of fun to navigate.
