Licenced games, especially those featuring superheroes, suck. Yes, there are few exceptions like the critically lauded Arkham series, a couple of decent Spider-Man games and Hulk: Ultimate destruction. For every one of those though, there’s about a million quickly-made, licenced cash-grabs.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's sales were as anticlimactic as its ending, forcing developer Eidos and publisher Square Enix to put the series on hiatus. We’ve heard nothing about Deus Ex since January this year, so it was a reasonable assumption that Adam Jensen and his cybernetic modifications had been put out to pasture. That’s not quite true.

A Criminal Past does succeed in at least giving players a more unique experience within the confines of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s layered stealth systems, but the overall feeling is one that is at odds with itself. The freedom to explore, but juxtaposed against a more restrictive and limited system of features that is ready to do its porridge in the big house.

According to sources over at Eurogamer, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided would have told a more complete story, with the narrative eventually being chopped as production grew to an unreasonably massive size over the five years of development. Which probably explains the utter anti-climatic ending for Mankind Divided. It's a pity we may never have any real resolution.
