One of the biggest surprises of E3's second day was easily the reveal of a Guardians of the Galaxy game at the Square Enix Presents showcase, which looked nothing like the publisher's infamously-empty Marvel's Avengers. Whereas that game starring Marvel's A-team felt like it was checking boxes on a live to-do list, Guardians of the Galaxy is hitting PC and consoles later this year as a dedicated single-player game.

PlayStation players will get in earlier than anyone else, followed by PC and Xbox players before the full open beta.

We don’t know an awful lot about Square Enix and Eidos Montreal/Crystal Dynamics’ new Avengers game. We know that it’s being made with Marvel, who’re usually quite pedantic about quality, so it’s likely it’ll be a great experience. Since its announcement though, there have been rumours that Th Avengers will be a live-service game, something akin to Destiny or The Division. Given that Anthem was basically a game about being a team of Iron Man wannabees, it might be an even better comparison.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider makes some puzzling changes to the series' well recieved gameplay that are hit and miss, but it's ineffectual story and underlying failure to critique its title character are its greatest missteps.

Causality usually takes a backseat to the action that unfolds in Tomb Raider, with Lara usually leaving a tomb in ruins and the people around her being none the wiser. That’s changing in Shadow of the Tomb Raider however, as developers Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics want the final chapter in Lara’s origin story to be a tale of consequences that impacts on the people closest to her.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider isn’t hesitating to give itself an extra graphical push, at least according to Eidos Montreal studio boss David Anfossi who reckons that the machine is more than capable of running the latest Croftastrophe caper at 4K and 60FPS.

The third time is the charm then, as Lara Croft will be back to close the book on her origin story in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
