As we wind back the clock and have a look at what 2019 had to offer gamers, it feels only fitting to start the first of our annual time travel trips to shine a light on the best new experiences that popped up throughout the year. In an industry where sequels dominate and current games are positioned to stretch as much longevity out of a property as is humanly possible, it’s new ideas that are seen as risky business.
With the fervour over the recent Rugby World cup dying down, now’s a good time to stoke the fire again. While it ideally should have been released during the World Cup to capitalise on that, Rugby 20 is readying itself for a January 23 2020 launch. The game’s already got a playable beta available to those who’ve pre-ordered, but the selection of teams an licences in the beta is limited.

Making a game and then slyly using heavier themes to market said product means that Ubisoft can and should be criticised for their PR sleight of hand, because this is a company that knows all too well what will sell and how they’ll push it out so that all eyeballs will be focused on their product. Nobody knows this more than the Ubi-Boss himself, Yves Guillemot.
E3 is still important. It’s still an annual tradition, an event that needs to be kept alive as it creates a buzz that few other conventions can hope to match. In recent years, the show has attempted to grow with the times, opening up its doors and allowing more of the public in so that it can continue to remain relevant. It’s a good start, but more needs to be done.
Some games gave you the option to be history’s greatest villain, while others actually rewarded you for being what the office calls a “Darryn”. They probably mean that in an endearing way.
