Marvel wants Legacy to prove that its core characters haven’t been abandoned

DC would pull its reboot trick again with last year’s Rebirth, as flicking that switch on and off again is something that the Distinguished Competition has mastered over the years. It’s also a trick that Marvel needs to desperately become experts at, as the last couple of years haven’t been kind. Marvel Legacy is meant to be that switch, as heroes new and old return to the fold.

It’s the 1990s, and comic books need to get with the times dudes. Kids today don’t want big blue boy scouts! They want action! Edginess! Content that appeals to their new-fangled Generation Xtreme culture of mountain dew and skateboarding! Comics naturally were happy to oblige on that trend back then. Here’s ten examples of gnarly character reinvention gone tragically awry.

Not everyone can afford to drop what scientists refer to as a “stupid” amount of money on an action figure that quickly becomes an inaction figure when you’re too scared to break the seal on your box. Spending around$250 to $300 on a figure is a bit ludicrous and the highest of ends in that regards. Fortunately, you can still get something comparatively decent and then some with Marvel’s Legends range of action figures.

I’ve been trying to make some sense all morning of the current state of Marvel comics, following the weekend reveal of 52 new covers (sort of rings a bell) that will chart the direction of the Marvel Universe in the wake of Secret Empire and the Legacy mini-series that aims to re-establish the status quo of several familiar icons. All I see is creative bankruptcy.

Marvel has done a terrible job so far on giving their new generation of heroes a legacy worth pursuing. Marvel Generations wants to change all of that with a ten-issue anthology series that pairs the next generation with the old. Here's who’ll be handling what on the creative side of Generations.

Captain America, supervillain. Sounds weird right? It could be worse of course, as nobody wants to remember that time that Steve Rogers became a werewolf. Secret Empire #1 however, plays on that idea that we all desperately want to believe that we’re the heroes of our own stories. Steve Rogers may be the new supreme leader of not only HYDRA but also the United States of America, but he has to continue to put on a brave face while doubts eat away at him from the inside and other external threats begin to plot his downfall.

Marvel responds to their “diversity initiative” and current comic book sales slump

By Darryn Bonthuys

For decades Marvel was known as the House of Ideas. Lately though? Those ideas seem to have run out, with the Disney-owned publisher pushing every single event it could think of out of the gate in at attempt to claw back some of the market share it lost to other rivals. So who’s to blame for the current slump then? You’d think with a multimedia juggernaut behind them that Marvel would be selling multiple runs of any comics with ease, but that’s not the case. And it’s all the fault of diversity. At least that’s what Marvel VP of Sales David Gabriel thought during an interview at a Marvel Retailer Summit.
